It's all drugs. Yeah, maybe you didn't progress to the worse stuff, big deal. But you're not everyone, are you; its not only about you. And I don't think I have any problems on this, cryptic or otherwise.

The jury is still out on the question if it is possible to have any kind of civilisation without any kind of drug. When compared with alcohol, weed does have the benefit that going cold turkey will not kill you. It also has medical benefits, and the ban on it was partly due to some guy not wanting paper made from it but from the logging areas he owned. It's not everyones cup of tea, so to speak (at least not mine for sure). But with regard to the poor souls in those pictures, their problem is more likely no available mental health, no place to live and no hope left whatsoever.
Unfortunately, there is rather good evidence for a causative link between THC, and psychosis or schzophrenia, for a certain at-risk segment of the population: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7442038/

On the other hand, I had a friend whose wife had severe MS, and he used to tell me it was the only thing that helped her control her pain and nausea. That was many years ago, I believe there are now prescription versions you can get for certain medical conditions, like MS; I think Sativex is one such https://www.mssociety.org.uk/living-with-ms/treatments-and-therapies/cannabis/sativex

And we must not ignore the respiratory damage, as you would get from smoking pretty much anything: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41089432/ , and an increased risk of lung and certain other cancers: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0169500226004824 .

“We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or blacks, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin and then criminalizing them both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night in the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did,” Ehrlichman said.
