Well, you're right up against it with cancer, so they use anything that might help, that is not a normal situation. Even the bloody chemo almost kills you, someone I know is going through it right now.
 
Southampton, close to where I live, has a UK national centre for immunology cancer research. Which is about developing drugs that make the cancer visible to the immune system so that the immune system destroys it. Normally cancer cells are able to hide from the host immune system. The southampton center does a lot of innovative research. It's a similar area of study to that of Jim Allison, who won the nobel prize for his work a few years ago.

The other area I've read about recently is progress in using mrna vaccines to treat cancer. Of course all this stuff is experimental and not prime-time yet.
