We are using FreeBSD in a Hydroponic Nutrient Control System. (pics)

It's all drugs, isn't it. Yeah, maybe you didn't progress to the worse stuff. But you're not everyone, are you; its not only about you, sadly.

The jury is still out on the question if it is possible to have any kind of civilisation without any kind of drug. When compared with alcohol, weed does have the benefit that going cold turkey will not kill you. It also has medical benefits, and the ban on it was partly due to some guy not wanting paper made from it but from the logging areas he owned. It's not everyones cup of tea, so to speak (at least not mine for sure). But with regard to the poor souls in those pictures, their problem is more likely no available mental health, no place to live and no hope left whatsoever.
Unfortunately, there is quite good evidence for a causative link between THC, and psychosis or schzophrenia, for a certain at-risk segment of the population: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7442038/

On the other hand, I had a friend whose wife had severe MS, and he used to tell me it was the only thing that helped her control her pain and nausea. That was many years ago, I believe there are now prescription versions you can get for certain medical conditions, like MS; I think Sativex is one such https://www.mssociety.org.uk/living-with-ms/treatments-and-therapies/cannabis/sativex . The idea is to get the medical benefits, without all the toxicity.

And we must not ignore the respiratory damage, as you would get from smoking pretty much anything: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41089432/ , and an increased risk of lung and other cancers: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0169500226004824 . Just because it's not tobacco, doesn't mean it won't give you lung cancer.

“We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or blacks, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin and then criminalizing them both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night in the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did,” Ehrlichman said.

Very rad setup.

Addiction is hard. On a humorous note: this bunch have learned the very difficult vertical sleep skill. These guys and girls are very talented vertical contortionists. :p

I don't think it's wrong to be not-sober, and I don't think it's fair to ask them to change. I don't think it's fair to tell someone they can't spend their life not-sober, either. I personally advocate for liberty (personal freedom without guilt), which sometimes includes addiction. We need to take responsibility for our lives, and that also means not excepting another life to change for our comfort. What I mean is that people react to their experience, and sometimes we (medicine) don't have the answers they need.

Some brain chemistries are prone to sadness while others joy. I think many times this is exaggerated by a lack of purpose. Most of us are and could be great at a few things, and this is why I think amphetamines (in combination with SSRI's and caffeine [which actually compliment each other pharmacologically]) are a reasonable alternative/compliment to addiction therapy.

Public safety is important. Living healthy is important. But, that's up to each of us to figure out when we decide to do that. In the meantime, we can enjoy them do the frontward Bernie.

I think sugar might be another one too. Still, this doesn't have much to do with freebsd! 😂

That's my girl! SMASH that 'Like' button! Awww, doesn't she look so cute and innocent, too, in her pink bow and all? What a little sweetie.😊

You're very right. I kept reminding myself of this as I wrote that post. I enjoyed your stuff, though.
Hahaha. Yeah, I think we're drifting a bit too faw away from freebsd-related stuff, this is supposed to be a technical forum! 😂
Computer control of hydroponics is definitely interesting though, from a technical prespective. The chinese multi-story hydroponic farms are interesting, I wonder if anything like that is being done in the europe or the US.

Well, we need to ignore the 'weed' part and think about the technical aspects. It's kind of a shame that 'weed' came into it, really, although that first photo montage gave me a laugh, I loved the expressions on zester's face. If I didn't know better, I might think he was a Yorkshireman. 😂 Hydroponics is really interesting, though.

"or want just to chit-chat about anything" :) :) What about "hobbit" pipe weed? Even full time wizards like Gandalf know what's up.

Responsible Cannabis use/discussion shouldn't be shamed. Alcohol (ab)use has ruined more families than cannabis ever will. Caffeine overdose can be fatal, you can't OD on cannabis. It's all about what's socially acceptable. Where's your medical "coffee" card to prove you need to use Caffeine? Pay up!

That's the least of your worries... maybe Eric Clapton was on to something.
Anyway, no more talk about 'addiction', etc. At least, not from me. It's too depressing.

Except THC and/or CBD gummies, pastries, lollipops, etc. don't need to be smoked, removing the risk!

Over-the-counter drugs which make you a good little worker bee are approved - stimulants. Even your local doctor will probably hand out an SSRI like candy, because why not? But when you factor in natural substances that have been in use for 1,000's of years, many of which can relieve pain and/or anxiety, that's baaaaad.

“The world is like a ride in an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. The ride goes up and down, around and around, it has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly colored, and it's very loud, and it's fun for a while. Many people have been on the ride a long time, and they begin to wonder, "Hey, is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and say, "Hey, don't worry; don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride." And we … kill those people. "Shut him up! I've got a lot invested in this ride, shut him up! Look at my furrows of worry, look at my big bank account, and my family. This has to be real." It's just a ride.

But we always kill the good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok … But it doesn't matter, because it's just a ride. And we can change it any time we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings of money. Just a simple choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.”

I'd rather have a pint of Damson ale, any day. We will be getting it here again soon, in the autumn. They have it for just a few weeks each year, in the damson season, in the New Forest. It's very nice beer. A pint of that, and a good lunch, and a walk out in the forest... can't wait. 😄

I believe there's a fortune quote (might be from elsewhere though) about how BSD and LSD were both created in Berkeley. Ah, here's one version of it.

Quick web searc shows it's from the Unix Hater's Handbook. "Two of the most famous products of Berkeley are LSD and Unix. I don't think that's a coincidence." Pretty sure the original I read was LSD and BSD, but a cursory web search doesn't find it

People in seattle will sell drugs 10 feet from a police officer and they wont do anything.
In some states, police will welcome you into the store front.

For certain substances, you have to listen to your body. When something stops being relaxing, stop using it.

Smoke from anything harms lungs. Some use whole herb vaporizers, water pipes only help from the heat for lungs.

If a nutrient solution set up were to be operated by an operating system. It seems like, whatever nutrient set up they have will have to be dictated by them, since they made it grow, so it works so far. Having a green thumb may not be enough. The nutrient dosing and timing have to be nearly perfect. When there's soil, soil buffers a lot, and already often has the right mix of nutrients.

In gardening, nature, including the soil, takes care of a lot for you, since plants evolved for that. A green thumb may help, but that's not enough there.

For a system that reads measurements from instruments, you may be able to do that without any hydroponic or gardening expertise.

I'm curious about that system having hard water. If they put other nutrients around it to balance it, or if it's better to selectively filter out certain minerals.

On another note, Maximum Yield was an amazing online magazine about hydroponics. Even though, It's about hydroponics, a lot of information is applicable to traditional gardening for vegetables, flowers and other plants. Unfortunately it's no longer in publication, but at least it's still available through archives.
