Let's try to perform the installation of FreeBSD on the Pocket C.H.I.P :)

Sounds like a fun little project. Hope to hear about it. :)

btw, is there a place to curate and search for little gadgets like this that run FreeBSD? Or is that all stuff cobbled in the wiki?

mobile device powered by FreeBSD.

At least one came, then went.

Thanks. I've seen that but never had any success getting FreeBSD working on a SheevaPlug.

I did originally think that Cooltrainer had managed to get FreeBSD working on a Seagate GoFlex Home unit, but it turned out that it was on a Seagate Dock Star, which isn't the same thing at all.

I would love to get it working one day. I have four of these units, as well as a Seagate Goflex Net. I'd hate the idea of them going into landfill...

Try to contact more developers and users as you can and propose to work together. This is the only chance you have (including Cooltrainer).

Hey I've been working with the C.H.I.P. for a couple years and I'd be interested in getting OSes other than linux running on there. There's still a community over on Discord at https://discord.gg/UvYbvPrqk6. I'm __chickn__ on there. I've already tried to boot the freebsd kernel using the u-boot on one of my C.H.I.P.s but couldn't get it to boot and tbh I'm not too familiar with how the kernel boots. Fill free to hit me up or join the server.

I don't like Discord, but I want to collaborate with you here.

Any progress on getting this running on SheevaPlug?

There is a link to

FreeBSD/arm for Marvell Orion, Kirkwood and Discovery systems-on-chip

but I doubt whether it is possible build it any more. Maybe there is an old source tree archived somewhere which could be used to try and build this.
Personally I would love to have another go at getting my Seagate GoFlex Home fully up and running on FreeBSD. I did manage to boot it up from a USB stick after a sustained effort, but was unable to access a hard disk. It's a pity since it would make a handy file server discretely placed away on some shelf.

Let's come back to work a little bit on this project. I see that the POCKET C.H.I.P does not have an HDMI port and this is very uncomfortable for me. I really want to use it with my HDMI monitor. A lot of years ago the company realized the DIP,HDMI and VGA :

but a lot of years have passed since then and today is very hard to find someone who wants to sell one. So,I'm trying to find a different solution. A product like the one below can be good since the POCKET C.H.I.P has only one USB port available :

it is an USB to HDMI and VGA converter and it seems that it does not need to install the driver, according with this video :

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vA7cznRRdSg

the point here is that I can't install any driver. Infact I doubt very much that there is a FreeBSD driver for one or more kinds of those adapters. So I think that the easier thing to do here is to find an adapter that does not need to have a driver to work correctly. Maybe its easier to find an USB to VGA adapter than an USB to HDMI. For me it is even good to find one between the first one kind.

What do you think ? Do you have some good advice to give to me ?

In the while I've asked all around and one guy told me :

You are not going to be able to find something like you're wanting. After looking at the C.H.I.P., it looks like your best bet would be to use the composite output (the thing that looks like a headphone jack) and plug it into a TV or a scaler that outputs HDMI. The TRS to composite cable is still on sale on the C.H.I.P. website. You can then use something like a RetroTINK (or similar scaler) to output the composite signal to an HDMI display.

So,based on his advices,I found the products below. Can someone tell me please if they are correct ? thanks :

  1. https://www.amazon.it/Tomost-maschio-videocamera-smartphone-altoparlanti/dp/B08Y86W2ZL
  2. https://www.amazon.it/Adattatore-Convertitore-Video-Composito-Audio/dp/B09NLLMH7P

I'm trying to avoid to buy the wrong products to keep the costs low...

probably good enough for games / video but annoying for text / reading
i don't think composite can do more than 576p or even more than 576i
wii could to 800x480 over component cable 3x rca

This is a nice USB screen :

they say that it works with the Raspberry Pi. But what happens if I use it with the Pocket CHIP or the RockPro64 ?
Does it work ? In your opinion,a driver is required or there is no need to have a driver ? I ask it because if it needs a driver,it may work on Debian / Ubuntu, but not on FreeBSD...so the porting of the driver should be made.

What I'm looking for is a 7" IPS VGA USB touch display that works as soon as I connect it to the soc. It should be powered through the USB port and connected through the VGA connector, without installing any driver.
