What happened to MIDI synths and Roland/etc equipment? It seems popular with DOOM, but older games like Warcraft 2 and Runescape used MIDI for music and sound different with a different SoundFont.
Runescape music sounds notably different with custom SFs. I like how SC55 sounds with Warcraft 2 music:
