Happy new year guys!

What is the most clever way to serve a node.js app, alongside an existing website hosted on freebsd?

I want to serve the node app via https, on say port 3000 as I have already certbot doing this job just fine. WITH website on php

Thanks alot for your suggestions (any!)

I got uname -a & httpd.conf here below:

FreeBSD ProServer 12.1-RELEASE FreeBSD 12.1-RELEASE r354233 GENERIC amd64

Code:
cat /usr/local/etc/apache24/httpd.conf
#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/access_log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/usr/local/apache2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/usr/local/apache2/logs/access_log", whereas "/logs/access_log"
# will be interpreted as '/logs/access_log'.

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to specify a local disk on the
# Mutex directive, if file-based mutexes are used. If you wish to share the
# same ServerRoot for multiple httpd daemons, you will need to change at
# least PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "/usr/local"

#
# Mutex: Allows you to set the mutex mechanism and mutex file directory
# for individual mutexes, or change the global defaults
#
# Uncomment and change the directory if mutexes are file-based and the default
# mutex file directory is not on a local disk or is not appropriate for some
# other reason.
#
# Mutex default:/var/run

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

Most of that is unnecessary and has nothing to do with using node "behind" Apache. You can use node to listen for requests as a server by itself but if you want to use Apache in front of it, you need to find out how to proxy requests to node's listening server.

Create a virtual host configuration in /usr/local/etc/apache24/Includes, try not to edit httpd.conf too much. Don't put your website definitions in it, that's where the Includes directory is for. As drhowarddrfine already noted look into proxying the request. That's how you do this for other types of web applications too.

In Apache the directive to look for is ProxyPass, you may need to also include a ProxyPassReverse directive. Your config file will include lines similar to the below as a result:

Code:
ProxyPass "/" "http://192.168.185.5:15692/"
ProxyPassReverse "/" "http://192.168.185.5:15692/"
ProxyPreserveHost On

ProxyPreserveHost is needed so that your node.js backend will build links using yourdomain.com/page-linked instead of creating links such as 192.168.185.5:15692/page-linked (thanks to this option, the original domain used by the web visitor will be sent to the backend as the backend would otherwise not be aware of it).

Thank you I was struggling with proxy pass for a week,

I have success by forcing some params in vhosts (ssl) for apache:
Code:
  GNU nano 4.9.2 /usr/local/etc/apache24/extra/httpd-vhosts-le-ssl.conf

<IfModule mod_ssl.c>
<VirtualHost *:443>
########CROSS ORIGIN ###################
Header set Access-Control-Allow-Origin "*"
###############WEBSOCKETS###############
# When Upgrade:websocket header is present, redirect to ws
    # Using NC flag (case-insensitive) as some browsers will pass Websocket
# RewriteCond %{HTTP:Upgrade} =websocket [NC]
    RewriteRule ^/ws/(.*) wss://localhost:8888/ws/$1 [P,L]
