FreeBSD Screen Shots

I'm a FreeBSD newbie and i'm sure that some of you want to vomit when a newbies uses a panel :) I actually like simplistsic but sometimes i want the familiarity of my Windows Desktop whenever i work in a gui environment. I have been using compton, openbox and lxpanel but i hate the fact that so many desktops are blue and gray. I am starting to hate blue. I moved to red since it is my favorite color and it happens to match the FreeBSD colors.

Anyway, i am modifying a gtk2 theme and i have called it Ruby-Slippers. Thus, i present to you Ruby-Slippers (a wip):

Hi kpedersen, i do agree that bright red on a black background is awful on computer screens.

Regarding anxiety viewing the color: My younger self would say that such people have psychological issues (like saying they feel cold when they see the color blue.) However, i do think that some people may just respond to red in various ways and it is not necessarily psychological to a degree. I have no idea why red is viewed in such a manner. Mabe it has to do with human blood and bloodshed in general. I certainly understand that point-of-view. Yet, we 'roll out the red carpet' for royalty. LOL.

I like your dektop. Very nice and the Maroon looks great with gray :)

Agree. That's why I use some orange shades. It's not as cold as blue, or boring as grey or black. You may also try green, or - don't laugh - (dark) pink.
The [G]UI is for to improve work efficieny, not for to look "cool" or impress your buddys. Many are not aware of wrong [G]UI settings may tire you quicker. I also used window's transparency for a short testing time. It only looks cool, but according to work efficieny it's contraproductive.
So be careful with picking colours. Using lighter shades are better than having full contrast. A few carefully selected colors are better than having it too coloful. My shells are also light-grey text ond dark-grey background. Looks old-school, since the monitors in the 1980s looked that way, but I find black text on white screens is too shrill when looking all day at it.
Also the combination of dark red, amber and brown may sound uncool, but make a good combination you can work nicely on text (shell/editor) with.
Try some different themes for the syntax highlighting of your texteditor as also as take your time to pick a good font.

you may find good background pictures when searching for "abstract [colorname] (background)"
Another way to get almost plain but not sterile background pictures is to make fotos of equable surfaces like the sky, sea, beach, walls,...
With your paint program (e.g. Gimp) you can quickly resize them to your screen's resolution, or change it to another basic color.

By the way I don't look much at those neofetch windows. When I have to use magnifying glasses to read the only line that interests me within all the others, while at the same time almost 50% of the space are for the ASCII-art of Beasty, it's fiddle-faddle to me, so I don't pay much attention. 😋

speak for yourself, i get plenty of work done. :) I think that if someone is distracted by their choice of desktop settings, then that someone must not be happy with their job. I MUST listen to music when i program (which is why i would never program for a living). I get plenty of work done, vide my attachments. And i am self-educated (my menu colors didn't distract me from learning either). :)

But i do think that some people cannot handle colors very well when working. It's like cell phones to me: why in the hell does anyone want to browse the web on a tiny phone screen over a desktop? good Lord! yet, all of that eye candy on those phones must be quite distracting and addictive. Have you seen the prices of some of these 'smart' phones? one could have a gaming pc with 1920x1080 screen. LOL

Well, if I shop on Amazon or hang on on Forums, I use a laptop. For things like espn.com, or weather, I use my phone. I have a Galaxy a51 that I got for $200 USD at walmart.com, and it's got everything I expect out of a phone - battery, reasonably big screen, good antennae for phone/wifi/Bluetooth - no need to blow $1k and up to get all that, and I've had it for 4 years already, because I saw no need to upgrade.

well, pink is really faded red. I like pink. Why would anyone laugh at a pink color choice? not liking a color is normal but discrimination is a whole other topic. I use pink often because it is soft and easy to look at. Pink flowers are very pretty and some butterflies and moths are pink and it is very pretty. I have started to build a second theme just for you: Pink-Petal :)

astyle well you can do whatever you want to do on your phone. I'm not trying to damper someones lifestyle. I could care less what others are doing (as long as it is lawful and not harming others). I simply cannot stand the concept of phone surfing. Privately, i think to myself 'get a damn laptop/desktop'. LOL. I refuse to build websites for phones. In fact, i have a line for phone users on my w-i-p website: This website requires the use of laptop or desktop computer with a wired internet connection. I simply do not care about phones. Personally, phones are to be used for telephoning and portability is a nice feature but web surfing is like using a fork to eat pudding instead of a spoon.

so are you requesting a Hello Kitty theme? :) I'll work on that in the future. I am being serious too. I've started a Pokemon (tm) theme but i'm not even finished with Ruby-Slippers. I'll add Hello Kitty to my list.

Honestly, browse whatever you want to with your phone. Be happy, be healthy and make the most of life my friend :cool:

I've started working on a black theme. I call it "Paint it Black", after the Rolling Stones song. I've always wanted a sleek black theme but these themes almost always have dark red text or a licorice (black/magenta) theme. I usually hate black themes because they are typically associated with vampires or goth stuff.

I made a spider-web in the darkness image pattern many years ago and i added a lighting effect to the image to make it appear like mist/fog or moonshine. I finally found a usage for this image - Paint it Black theme. Now i just need to finish the theme (along with Ruby Slippers, Pokemon BSD, Hello Kitty BSD, Purple Party, Orange Sunset and Wooly World). I usually work at the login shell (LOL) or boot into xorg with twm but sometimes i like to use my openbox, compton, lxpanel setup. I seem to be drifting away from DEs. If anyone has suggestions for a black theme, please let me know...

ps jpeg compression usually warps the spider background pattern. it is smoothe in png format on a pc but that is too large to add to the server.

Now, first... I do somewhat apologize because I suppose I'm also showing off a little bit right now (I'm still kinda hyped about having my servers back up & running!). And I know... technically this isn't a "real" screenshot (but then again...)... anywhoo...

Thing about me? I'm a geek/nerd and I also happen to enjoy anime. So it didn't take long before I heavily started using anime (related) names for my servers. Fun fact: years ago, at work, we moved away from physically hosted hardware (= our own datarack) in favor of VPS servers. I was in charge of that project, and I ended up setting up / utilizing / and naming our 3 new servers: Balthasar, Caspar and Melchior. Yups, our very own Magi (heavy reference to the Neon Genesis Evangelion series ("NGE")). This always made me smile :)

Fun fact: my boss actually happened to be religious (I never knew), but he did know that I was not. He never knew about the anime reference but once he learned of these names he actually felt proud that we (as a company) "referenced such an "iconic part of history"" and any discussion (some colleagues didn't approve) went out the window because... I quote: "these servers are our "wise men", and it's only fitting that we honor the wise men of old...". He actually complimented me... I never dared tell him about "NGE" :P

So now I'm right back at it and honestly... I can't help but stupidly giggle over this screenie:

I just finished installing my "Zefiris kernel" (= config) onto my "Dragoon" server ... Peacemakers beware! I just can't help but grin a bit.....

This here is a direct reference to the Scrapped Princess anime series; one of the first series which my gf & me both watched together (every week we'd hop onto my couch and watch the next 1 - 3 episodes (I got the DVD box?)) and it left us both so impressed with the story, the animation, the voice acting.... My gf actually needed a tissue a few times, because that's how much she got caught up in it.

Zefiris is one of the main characters and also a huge favorite of mine. She's a so called "Dragoon" => an artificial being build by mankind to help fight off an alien invasion. In my opinion... Zefiris is to 'Scrapped Princess' what Rei Ayanami is to 'NGE': totally awesome yet also kinda disturbing at the same time.

Within the context above: "Zefiris" is my main server... 2 cpu cores, 4Gb of memory and 100Gb storage. Unlimited data. "Dragoon" is my backup server, you can see the specs above. The main purpose is MX backup, but I'm also planning on doing some mirroring back and forth (like my PostgreSQL database), and it's also going to be used as a bit of a DMZ for "semi-offline" backup storage as well.

First things first though... I still have a lot to (re)configure.

My gf is a huge "Hello Kitty" fan so I'm defintiely going to be pointing her attention to this.

Nice! I name my stuff after games and had Hexen/Doom/Heretic for a bit. Path of Exile had some interesting names, and I liked that bandit trio for 3 servers :p My router hostname is Wraeclast :cool:

Cool naming scheme! I was thinking Final Fantasty with Dragoon :p (that's my favorite class on FFXIV)

With Dragoon I'm thinking quick, powerful, and flashy (Dragoons jumping and flashy spellls FFXIV); I'd use that name on a high-end workstation (likely my main desktop) with case RGB :p
