Discussion and screenshots about text gaming on FreeBSD. This is for games on the command-line or terminal interface. Many games are ascii and/or curses. Signify if the game uses an interpreter or emulator. Topic includes utilities or ASCII animations that aren't games, but are under the games...
I recently updated to 12.2 and a user immediately noticed that fortune no longer works.
I know it's not that important, and apparently there was some sort of holy war over inclusion of "offensive" fortunes, which resulted in a change to the default installation. I don't care about any of that...
When was the last time you played a computer game? I really like one of Benjamin Franklin quotes – “We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.” – he lived in times where computer games did not existed yet but the quote remains current. I do not play games a...

Is there any Ascii Roguelike for telnet, which you like ?

Hello,
Chess game is very popular.
Would you eventually know the possible best ncurses chess game? (browser, editor and (x)board chess engine frontend)?
- My friend has xboard.
- Me, ncurses and a terminal (no X11 monitor).
There is cboard.

When I opened my inbox this morning I found a typical WTF thread: the (hardly) "offensive" fortune cookies have been kicked out of 10-BETA4. Since I (and many others) find this Just Plain Stupid (tm) I created a port to bring some sanity back into fortune. Anyone running FreeBSD 10-BETA4 feel...
My main terminal application is x11/evilvte, but I'm really enjoying sysutils/tmux a lot - there are times for tabs, and there are times when I need it all right there. I'm not a fan of alt-tab for TTYs. What terminal add-ons or tweaks do other people use/like?
Question: how does one suggest or nominate (or contribute) a quote to be added to the list for fortune?
If I could vote for a phrase, I would choose the Stephen Wright quote that SirDice uses in his signature, "Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it."
Do you have a...
I am trying to modify a PC-BSD script that I can use to install a vanilla version of FreeBSD. At the moment I have:
distFiles=base doc games kernel lib32
My plan was to remove games, however I find it a bit odd that games.txz is part of the FreeBSD base system. So, I was wondering whether...
Hello. After a fresh install on an old laptop (where i can't run X), I decided to undust and have a little nice time playing some of the bsdgames. Sadly, I found that the port version is "capped". gofish and monop ain't here, unluckly my favourites. I looked for a long while, and found the...
If you go to /usr/games, there is a 'game' called bcd. It even has a short manual page that says 'reformat input as punch cards or paper tape'. Apparently you give the program a string such as $bcd myname, and it displays that input at the top of a bunch of numbers.
I do not understand what...
So, I am a recent GNU/Linux convert and am moving some of my work onto a FreeBSD 9.0 VPS. I enjoy having fortune lighten up my day so I attempted to install it through what I see as conventional means:
# pkg_add -r fortune
# pkg_add -r bsdgames
# sysinstall
Installing bsdgames through this...
Hello,
I want to install the classic BSD games, such as battlestar, trek, phantasia, etc. I've been looking in the ports section and in the forums, and googled also, but I didn't find what I wanted.
So how would I do it? pkg_add -r bsd-games doesn't not work. I really love those games :)...
I'm trying to get the game to work in my box, and it mostly does if not for the missing cursor. The game compiled and installed without a hitch. During the game play, however, the cursor is missing when I go into the map view ('X') or when 'x' is pressed. It seems to be there since I can move...
I run a pretty low-key webserver and router. For a long time I kept an account ("nhplayer") just for playing Nethack, but I'm thinking of putting up a new account for Nethack plus the freebsd-games package (and any other fun ASCII treasures I run across).
However I've got a new-found focus...
