Think of the Children

This outcome of a walled garden is what is seen as "user-friendly". Loads of people are asking for that kind of crap, even on these forums (easy installers, easy init systems, easy gui tooling). You can't escape it unless you migrate to a community/project that focuses entirely on correctness rather than attracting casual consumers.

As the world becomes a crowded, noisy place, full of bad ideas; projects need to start 'gatekeeping' to protect themselves in the same way that disallowing bicycles on a motorway is 'gatekeeping'.

I am afraid for the future of FOSS. It is a scary world where rebellion has been quelled.

Ironic that ARAPANET turned out to be one of the greatest advances in communications. Then was killed by control.

In the old days they would add on pedals and call a scooter a moped. Some way to let kids ride legally on the road. It was a scam.

They are defiantly struggling here with regulation. Kids on Golf Carts are all over neighborhoods. They are not street legal. People are getting hurt.

Motor assisted biking is not allowed on our Boardwalk Bike Path. But 4 Person pedal cars are. They take up the whole path. Rentals of course.

We don't take biking as a serious means of transport in America. It is a pleasure thing. Death ride if you ask me. Bad enough risk for full motorcycles.

When I go on Road Trips I rent a car from an agency 2 miles up the street. That is the only time I ride my bike. Being the lazy person I am.

Some towns have full bike paths integrated with roads. Because it has been implemented piecemeal and people don't know how to drive with bikes it is dangerous.
Public Transit has great bike programs here now. It is not the obstacle it once was.

Seeing the Lime model evolve has be interesting. We usually don't share bikes. But the clusterfsck of leaving scooters and bikes at random places is stupid.
A geo-fence was causing all of them to bomb out at Chesapeake-Norfolk City line. What a trip. It took them 9 months to finally fix that glitch. A pile of disabled vehicles and pissed off users.
Left in the middle of nowhere because of a remote computer.

Excellent article by phk, hits to bottom of things, the states have not only right, but obligations to pursue criminals.

The "tech bros" sought to create a parallel environment where their regulation governs the affairs, well, that is simply not possible.

Whose idea is to put Internet connected devices into hands of children and elderly, whose idea is to shove computers up everyone's nose, use them where they don't belong, if not of tech bros.

Man I hate to get political here but you made a point.

Only certain STATES are pursuing AGE verification.

So now we have reached a point were the lowest democratic value STATE sets all the rules?

LCD
LeastCommonDemocracy or LowestCommonDemocracy

No no I am not talking about age verification, I am talking about mass TLS.

Also take in account that in Europe especially in smaller countries we do not have an Orwellian style agencies that retent and warehouse historic user data and such, but we expect, that somebody in the police, can do something about a court giving a snooping warrant.

Right now, when that happens the police just says pretty please to Facebook and Facebook honours them, but that is just because Meta is trying to keep this "status quo", again not realistic.

Our police cannot employ specialists and they cannot buy 0days and shit, they cannot hack. It is simply out of the budget.

"Encryption for everyone" was never a legalized, social movement, if it were there would be a wide public discussion about it, the case would be presented as everyone, the bullied woman and the whistleblower, but also the rapist and the spy, get to communicate via some Enigma machine automatically, no plain communication ever goes on beyond anyone, who the hell would've voted for that?

About the stupid age thing, I said in other threads and hinted here, it is a consequence of tech bros pushing technology where it doesn't belong, mixed with tech-inept rulers that are simply incapable to come up with an optimal solution and thus will just hammer it.

The key to some issues is not technical but in governance. We rarely mention what plague advertising is, and that big weight behind age shit is failure to comply to no-children-targeting laws for ads.

My opinion is that advertising should be tightly regulated and failures to comply a felony and not a breach of some code.

Yea I saw him talking about that angle "Encryption for Everyone" from the tech bro's. But wasn't that largely bluster except for Signal?
They were saying End to End but it was not really.

The internet is a narcissist dream. Twitt-kick-kinder-metatube-tok made it very profitable for them..

Think of the Children and Remove them from the internet. It is for adults only.

I was thinking of a walled garden like CompuServe was with its own ecoculture.
Only kids and monitored.
Not Roblox with child molesters chatting it up.

The ends are invisible operating system background processes. The user is only a user. People really buy this, unfortunately.
