Rant about Aliens...

No, you read bit wrong, these were no straight lines. I don't care about straight lines, the air traffic exists in the area.

Imagine raising a big drone with bright light to airliner altitude and then doing a circle of lets say 500m radius. The person watching straight from below at night would see a small star-like apparition circling an rather small area of the horizon.

But, there were two of them and they were aligned to same circular motion.

Ejected phase of a space vehicle could produce a swiveling debris where a 2D plane would look like objects going in the circle, however this is often accompanied by other visual artifacts.

It looked like you picked two random but adjacent stars out of thousands seen in the POV, and made them spin on a circle.

meteoric iron might be a possibility and was used by early humans to make tools
True. I also read that the Japanese used to pan for iron ore in certain mountain streams, and maybe something like that might be enough for a limited industrial revolution, but it wouldn't be as easy as extracting iron here on Earth.

Iron is pretty frequent. A planet without iron is rather seldom.
True, but in maybe that iron tends to sink down to the core of the planet, especially in planets with higher gravity than what we have here on Earth. Interestingly, a quick internet search seems to reveal that both Venus and Mars have higher concentrations of iron ore in the crust, than Earth has, so maybe my idea is all wet.

Hmm, I wonder what it was you saw then. It's hard to think of anything man-made that would look like that, unless it's balloons carrying radiosondes, but there would have to be two of them to circle each other. Helicopters wouldn't fly that high, and as far as I know there are no drones that go to anything like that altitude. I remember there were trials of high altitude gliders to provide internet service years ago (I think google were working on it), but I think satellites (starlink) have ended anything like that. Very strange.

I hope it wasn't some kind of spying platform... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Chinese_balloon_incident

My thoughts exactly.

Where I come from is scientific background, but I've turned to a rational type of open mind where unforeseen phenomena must be rejected by science, and it can, and in all honesty will remain unsolved. Our method disproves theories that operate on a number of fixed facts. We can't do anything if there is not enough input.

There is an old joke, partisans were hiding on the bottom of the well in an abandoned village while nazis were searching for them. With no results they gather around the well, and one of them says "they could be in the house over there", followed by wind echoing "they could be in a house over there". Another one says "they might be in the forest", and the wind echoes - they might be in the forest. The third one says, "they might be in the well", and the echo sounds - "they might be in the forest" ;)

So our local answer to something open ended like strange dots in the sky is simply - they might be in the forest - and life goes on :)

What turned me from skepticism when I was in mid 20s was watching a Russian documentary on the subject. It was linked to on a military forum discussing some satellite stuff, human affairs.

Late 80s and 90s Soviet / post Soviet countries were in deep economic shit and black economy was huge part of the deal. Actually commissioned military officers would sell space-force scrap and bullshit stories about aliens for couple of hundreds of dollars/pounds to a foreign news outlet. There are red flags about these stories, worldwide. This is the one for that region. In USA, a red flag is middle of nowhere reporting to local news; same attention seeking but this time not financially driven perhaps. There are a number of sightings in Brazil - they have to have a ton of fake ones for some reason I don't know, but knowing the context of regions of reporting is crucial.

So in that Russian documentary the aces of the Soviet space programme, the cosmonauts the chief designers spoke and they spoke about direct encounters. The tone and style of documentary was official, cordial, pure, no Ancient Aliens hype bs. I've yet to find it again.

Another example is the supposed contact between Croatian MiGs and something in late 90s early 00s when the country had so much on its mind that even actual alien landing would probably not be a news for more than 1 day, it wasn't publicized, it leaked out from military reports. Supposedly something just disappeared being tailchased by MiG-21 accelerating from M1.5+ up to the limit. The aircraft glitches are out of the question as MiG-21bisK does not have a search radar, it was interdirected by ground stations to an interception mission, and the ground system just supposedly saw something turn around and flee so fast it went above maximum tracking speed in the matter of seconds.

This actually mimics Belgian reports of bogey contacts that F-16 could not intercept roughly around the same years. Not classified, officially reported, but not publicized in civil media as any sort of story initially.

I wonder if a high altitude balloon with a sufficiently large sized payload, suspended on a long tether beneath the balloon, might appear as two bright points of light circling each other from the surface, if both the balloon and the payload were highly reflective. The length of the connecting tether would be small compared to the distance to the observer, so the two bright points will appear to be at the same height. Of course, I'm just speculating!

Yeah, I still have some high quality Tungsram tubes for a hifi amplifier, that I bought by airmail from a guy in Budapest, I couldn't get the valves here as they are out of production. I asked him where the valves came from and he said "from military store". They sound very nice in my amplfiier. 😁

Perhaps you can remember the soviet phobos mars mission, where the probe mysteriously disappeard, but sent back images of an elongated shadow on the surface of mars, and a long shape approaching phobos. I remember this was reported on the TV in the UK at the time. They speculated that the probe either collided with whatever object cast the shadow, or was deliberately destroyed by it. It's a very interesting story. Again, the credibility of the russian people who released the information is beyond question, senior figures in the soviet space agency, these are not the kind of people who are going to make things up. This is a report from british TV made in the early '90s about the soviet phobos mission, that was broadcast here at the time.

The lady in the video is Marina Popovich who was a top soviet test pilot and cosomnaut. She also talked about seeing flying orbs in some of her flights, and she did a lot of research on ufos. I would put her evidence in the same high grade as that from the US Nimitz pilots. What happened to the phobos mars probe is another mystery that has never been solved.

"THEY" are all around us.

Think the documentary, THEY LIVE.

Yes, it was entertainment but according to sources, maybe a tweet, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper stated "that the 1988 cult classic They Live was a documentary."

I hadn't thought about it till last week when my wife said she wanted to go see the new Spielberg movie. I am positive it's no coincidence that all the hoopla over releasing of the UFO stuff from the US government coincided with it in the weeks and months leading up to the movie release.

Yeah, movie hype... I wondered that too. I saw the trailer on youtube, it looked pretty boring tbh, not as good as indiana jones and raiders of the lost ark. Don't know if I can be bothered to go and see it tbh.

Seems to be big money in Aleeens, rather surprisingly. We need to maintain a healthy degree of skepticism.

"Less than 48 hours after its release on Amazon Prime Video, The Age of Disclosure "broke that platform’s record for highest-grossing documentary" according to Deadline Hollywood.[8] According to Deadline, the documentary was "outperforming major studio titles", such as Jurassic World Rebirth and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.[8]

I wonder what my favourite magician, the late great James Randi, would say... ah, yes..

This 'reality' stuff, sure is strange...

I'm not that enamored by Spielberg movies. Rotten Tomatoes reviewers seem to give it around a C+ while Roger Ebert's site gives it 4 stars so who knows. We have nothing to do today and she's bored so we're going. I'll give my expert opinion later.

Ok. I just got back from watching "Disclosure Day". I'll give my opinion of the movie overall and then say something about it that you may not want to read. It's not a spoiler, really, but more like a heads up.

I thought this was the best Spielberg movie I've ever seen. It's thought provoking, mysterious and makes you pay attention throughout. You won't get bored. Yes, Emily Blunt was pretty good. All in it is probably worthwhile to go see.

NOW HERE COMES THE PART YOU MIGHT NOT WANT TO READ AHEAD OF TIME IF YOU WANT TO GO SEE IT.

The end of the film made me feel lied to. And they made up a bunch of malarkey to end it with instead of some grand reveal to give you something to think about. The ending kind of messed up the rest of it for me. My wife said she felt the same way and it's what she had read in some of the online reviews.

Fun fact, people who don't have a country's citizenship, but live in the country nonetheless, they are sometimes called "Resident aliens". Anyone who's trying to go through the immigration process would know what that term means.

Oh, and I never even knew about the TV series by that name until I tried to google the very term "Resident Aliens" !
😂

I'd say we need as a requirement the collision that gave us our moon. And a big moon at that. Reasons being
  • Plate tektonics. The reminders of the plates from that time, be it from earth or the impactor, is still visible in measurements of the deep earth structure. It is highly likely that this gave us plate tectonics, which is needed for a good and stable environment. Neither Venus nor Mars show signs of tectonics, and they have no big moon. But they have a surplus of CO2, which would be reduced and moderated by plate tectonics.
  • The big moon stabilized the precision of the earth axis, so it does not wobble too much. A planet with an axis tilt like Uranus would not allow for life. There is a way to colonize those worlds (Larry Niven wrote about that), but it would still be highly suboptimal.

Yeah. The moon is still a puzzler, and personally I'm also convinced it is a cause for why there is life today on Earth. But I didn't want it make too complex, since after all this is a fun thread.
