Your problem is that you have an extra line in your /etc/rc.conf where you assign a static IP address to em0. Don't duplicate lines, you'll need to comment out any line where you assign a static IP address to em0.

your were not alone willing to show help in my distress yet it were your explanations that let me get out of the inet absence problem.
1) swiching onto enx428bd204fa80 in the vm netsettings GUI
2) commenting out the odd line in rc.conf
the issue is solved, thank you I can go on with the Handbook now
 
It's already been quite the learning experience I bet? When diagnosing problems, take it step by step, don't try to rush to the finish or take shortcuts. You first have to learn how to walk before you're able to run.

Anyway, good to hear it's working now. There's a lot more to learn ahead of you. Just take it slow, and don't hesitate to ask questions here, there are plenty of people willing to explain and/or help out.
