installing both XFCE4 and KDE+Plasma 6

Hello,

I am an happy user of a FreeBSD 14.3-RELEASE light desktop (fanless) built on Xorg and XFCE4. I’m reading good things about KDE+Plasma 6 so I wonder how I could try it without breaking everything else :)

Is it safe (and doable) to install KDE+Plasma 6 along with my existing XFCE4 setup?
I use startxfce on the console to launch my desktop so I guess I could use another command to start a different desktop setup.

Also, I’ve chosen XFCE4 initially because it’s supposed to be one of the lightest. Is there any performance / resource consumption comparison between various window managers?

Yes it’s fine.. just know that you will have xfce apps and kde apps all mixed together .. nothing wrong with it. I’ve been a long time i3 and dwm guy because of the tiling and it taking up the full screen so I can see everything.. just realized kde and xfce can do it also..

On 2 laptops I have Kde+kronkite whatever how it’s spelled.. and the other two the slower ones I have
xfce+zentile.. all my desktops will get kde.. Zentile is crap and dosen't work half the time..

Personal issue Lol

Good luck!

I don't think that XFCE4.20 is a lightweight DE today. On the contrary, I think it's a fat, swollen pig.

Yes, there is such an article (our guys copied the graph from the article to the forum). Their graphics haven't lost their relevance.

In general, I completely agree with Andrey Stolyarov. He believes that all these nuclear cores and sets of radiator RAM batteries are only for heating up the atmosphere.
But this is more of a freak ideology, not a mass culture of consumption.
I see that we are also sliding into this shit: more gigahertz, more gigabytes.
I am tired of this stupid and hopeless race.
I do not think that I should pay so much to launch the Desktop.

That is why all DE today is a waste of hardware resources.
and considering that soon the AI code will be actively included in mass consumption, then 128 GB of RAM will be very little.
Thus, the planet may not have enough traditional electricity or the price of electricity will grow per 1 kW.
In short, it is up to you to decide. This is your life, but I am reluctantly switching to sway, but I will not switch back to heavy DE.
