hp deskjet 5150

You mean http://localhost:631/ ?

I have this but don't know where to start.

Is there some option to try and print a test page?
Yes. There should be a Manage Printers under the Administration tab, or an entire Printers tab, wherein you can delete the existing one (which we assume is not configured correctly), and then there should be an add printer button that gives you an add-printer wizard to re-add the new one. Once you have that configured, you should be able to view the printer and print a test page.

Do you have in /etc/rc.conf cupsd_enable="YES
Does cupsd is running?
Do you have HPLIP installed?
If you have than use browser and put in http://localhost:631 and find your printer.
Open HPLIP and add your printer.
Printer should be on.
I think I'll start from scratch on another computer.

From what I can make out, I first need to install cups and hplip and then

sysrc cupsd_enable=YES
service cupsd start

after which I should be able to

Yes. Then from there, Administration → Add Printer, and follow the wizard. There should be a "Local Port" option at some point that lists your USB port, and then another one to select make/model and thus driver. From there, you can set as default and run off a test page.

I have just notice that usbconfig shows Deskjet 5150c HP when I connect a USB cable between the computer and printer even though the printer is switched off.

This surprises me. Can anyone explain how this works?

Can the printer power on with just USB connected? Maybe it offers that for low-power/efficiency.

Could maybe be a USB flash/update/recovery means?

My printer is an HP Deskjet 5150. I get the option of HP Deskjet 5100, but I guess this is close enough.

I'm also asked to provide a PPD file. I don't know what that is and if I really need one.

Anyway I added the printer and proceeded to try an print a test page, but got an error saying unable to send data to printer.

Looks like I need to dabble in the manual.
