I think since I've been reading, researching and trying everything I can locate about using the GeForce GT 1030 video card with my 13.0 BSD system without success, I'm going to return it through Amazon and try an AMD Radon video card. The MSI Z590 PRO WIFI Lightning Gen 4 Motherboard has the i7-10700k cpu installed, however I have not been successful with the intel stuff either. Darn, I didn't think that buying a new Motherboard and CPU I would have so many issues with my beloved BSD. I started using FreeBSD with the 4.9 version, but have had major open heart surgery where my memory at the age of 75 just is not as it once was.

Thanks for all of you BSD'ers for your long time support.

so you boot your system to a console, login and then run startx?
Did you make sure your username is added to the video group?
are both the modules installed?
You installed the nvidia driver?
as root:
pkg install nvidia-driver
Yes, both modules are installed. And, I had already installed nvidia-driver by pkg install nvidia-driver.

Before returning it, post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log. The card should work just fine on FreeBSD with the x11/nvidia-driver. Very little configuration is required. But without having a look at your logs there's no way to tell if things are set up correctly.

From the command line: cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999. Then post the resulting URL here.

Do you have more than one GPU in this system?
Can you show the output of pciconf -vl?

Indicate that Xorg does not know which driver to use, so you will need to have a minimal xorg config entry that will specify the nvidia gpu pci id

Creating the file /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/30-nvidia.conf
with the following should work
Code:
Section "Device"
  Identifier "Nvidia"
  Driver "nvidia"
  BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection
Since I don't have the actual computer that was having this issue on hand, this is from memory

Need help on correct syntax to change the default resolution from 1024x768 to 1920x1080. The card is working on my MSI Z590 PRO WIFI Lightning Gen 4 Motherboard & an intel i7-10700k, 3.8GHZ LGA1200 cpu, but I’m not able to run the Nvidia- Settings file so as to change the resolution. I tried the kern.vt.fb.default_mode=“1920x1080”, but doesn’t work. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Looking at
Code:
[ 36.885] (!!) More than one possible primary device found
[ 36.885] (--) PCI: (0@0:2:0) 8086:9bc5:1462:7d09 rev 5, Mem @ 0xa3000000/16777216, 0x80000000/268435456, I/O @ 0x00005000/64, BIOS @ 0x????????/65536

Indicate that Xorg does not know which driver to use, so you will need to have a minimal xorg config entry that will specify the nvidia gpu pci id

Creating the file /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/30-nvidia.conf
with the following should work
Code:
Section "Device"
  Identifier "Nvidia"
  Driver "nvidia"
  BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection
Since I don't have the actual computer that was having this issue on hand, this is

I have had success!!! Here is HOW:
pkg install -y xf86-video-nv
Then in: /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d; I removed all other conf files and added: driver-nv.conf
With this Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "nv"
EndSection

And now I have a screen with the correct resolution!!!

Thanks to you all for your patience, time, and support!!

nv(4) is an old driver which has only 2D acceleration and poor performance... not recommended. You should really use the "nvidia" driver instead.

Thank you for your advice! Nonetheless, at my stage in the passing of seasons, I’m content with the videos that I tend to watch! However, if loading and implementing the nvidia-driver becomes as simple and straightforward as the older version, I’ll gladly move on into the future!

It really is as simple and straightforward. I've converted three Desktop machines with nVidia GPUs from Windows 10 to FreeBSD 13 the last week. The steps I've initially outlined were all that is needed:
  1. install x11/nvidia-driver and x11/nvidia-xconfig
  2. load the nvidia-modeset kernel module ( kldload nvidia-modeset)
  3. run nvidia-xconfig
  4. startx
  5. use x11/xrandr to setup your "screen layout".

Before committing to this idea I was doing a little research and it seems like most people have a very streamlined experience similar to what I got to enjoy.

I'm not sure what your overall goal is but personally I'd definitely highly recommend you to not use old drivers. This community tends to be very supportive as long as you provide the information requested (and properly format it). If you're encountering errors (like you seem to), don't just give up. Otherwise your next trip/adventure will not be better and you might be less motivated as you didn't complete this with a positive experience.

Don't be discouraged by the "briefness" that some of the answers/posts you get on this forum. For people helping it's initially often difficult to determine the experience/knowledge of the person asking a question. Furthermore, a lot of people in here are professionals in their respective fields and/or have years and decades of experiences using (and developing!) FreeBSD. Spending years on these forums helping people out tends to lead to shorter, more brief answers & explanations to increase overall efficiency. If you think you need more information or details on a particular piece of information provided, just say that and people will usually get back to you with more detailed explanations as long as there's some level of interest & motivation to understand (and try) the provided information visible.

Thanks for your thoughts! I would appreciate being able to move onto the newer nvidia-driver. So if I were to reinstall 13.0 for the 10th time where I got into the same abyss following the hand book and forum advice, what you you do with that same experience? I do believe that most of the issues I encountered is due to the MSI BIOS. It is simply the most frustrating BIOS That I’ve ever encountered!!!!

I have nothing valuable to say regarding the BIOS situation. Can you provide the list of components of your system (CPU, GPU, Motherboard, ...) or the exact model number of the device if it's a laptop? Unless this is a rather old system I'd expect it to run EFI.

There are certainly a few things you can do. First thing that comes to mind is that I believe to have read something about an Intel Xeon E3-1200 or E3-1500 CPU in your pciconf output. I do believe that some of these come with an integrated GPU. This might explain the message from your xorg log regarding "More than one possible primary device found". However, I don't know whether that is on a "hardware level" or whether you simply have another GPU driver loaded (eg. i915kms) in which case it might be as simple as unloading that driver.
Also keep in mind to remove the old driver before trying to use x11/nvidia-driver again.

While I too went through a couple of reinstalls when I fist started using FreeBSD, this is often largely unnecessary. Especially these days where you can use ZFS (a filesystem) which allows to create snapshots. Then you can create a snapshot after the clean installation (and setting up the basic things like networking) and whenever you feel like going back to that clean working state it's as simple as zfs rollback. This will revert the state of ALL files in the dataset (eg. "the disk" or "the partition") back to what they where when you took the snapshot after your basic setup was completed using zfs snapshot.

I will compile all the info I can, but know that I purchased the msi motherboard through Amazon and, even more though it was shipped as new, I believe it was a returned item. Did not have factory user manual included only a quick setup pamphlet. Thus, all I can do is to point you to the internet. MSI z590 pro WiFi atx lighting gen 4 intel motherboard. I also purchased an intel i7-10700k 3.8GHZ LGA 1200 cpu. Also, 32 Gig of RAM. The board and also the chip has integrated WiFi, Ethernet, and Intel Graphics. Oh, I did purchase a new 750 watt power supply.

After using the old driver, I must admit strongly that I need to, somehow, get the new driver to work on my new machine!!! I wished I had more experience in this whole journey. Most BSDer's who follow these forums work with FreeBSD many, many more hours than I ever have. Most of the syntax suggestions made are simply not understood so I have to try to remember or try to figure them out with my very old and limited knowledge. It would be great if I could be in a face-to-face group and learn from those very accomplished individuals. So, my goal now is to learn how to be able to install the correct files and syntax to use the nvidia-driver. I think the best way for me to do that is to interact with a person or a group who would be willing to walk me through the entire process. I will write all of the information down on my note pad and then reinstall FreeBSD 13.0 so as not to have any files left over that will impact the install. In addition, I don't know how to use Zfs snapshot; therefore, that would be something that I would like to study and learn. Since I don't work with FreeBSD as so many of the posters do, the process is very new just like the ever changing technology. And, that is very exciting to me, but my cognition is simply slipping away.
Your thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Here is what I'm trying to accomplish for removing the old xf86-video-nv driver and adding the new nvidia-driver:
1. pkg remove xf86-video-nv and then pkg install nvidia-driver,
2. cd /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
3. ls into the xorg.conf.d directory and ee 30-nvidia.conf and add this syntax
Section "Device"
Identifier "Nvidia"
Driver "nvidia"
BusID "PCI0:1:0.0"
EndSection

When I did this a few tries earlier, I would get a response that the BusID "PCI0:1:0.0" needed some sort of syntax after the entry that would complete the line. That would mean to move the last quotation to the end of the added syntax.

Any thoughts as to this procedure?

According to the logs in https://termbin.com/qn0m the nvidia driver is in use, is that correct ?

Before returning it, post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log. The card should work just fine on FreeBSD with the x11/nvidia-driver. Very little configuration is required. But without having a look at your logs there's no way to tell if things are set up correctly.

From the command line: cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999. Then post the resulting URL here.
It is because I just made all the changes in my last post and I have graphics! I removed the xf86-video-nv pkg and the driver-nv.conf file in /usr/local/etc.X11/xorg.conf.d and added the 30-nvidia.conf file as you wrote. Rebooted the system and all is fine.

What a nice accomplishment from the help of others with much greater knowledge and experience than me. Again, a heart felt thank you from our family of BSDer's!

Is your thread solved? If so, you can add the relevant prefix. Thanks.

pkg install nvidia-driver, …

… Any thoughts as to this procedure? …

For simplicity, nvidia-xconfig can help.

Code:
% pkg provides /usr/local/bin/nvidia-xconfig
Name : nvidia-xconfig-470.63.01
Desc : Tool to manipulate X configuration files for the NVidia driver
Repo : FreeBSD
Filename: usr/local/bin/nvidia-xconfig
