Hello all FreeBSD users,
With the intent of saving me time when I check in my FreeBSD server over SSH, I added a one-liner to my .profile that tells me which of the machine's configured services are alive and which ones are dead. It's working well and I thought I'd share.
Sorry for this naïve question.
I am trying to boot a FreeBSD virtual machine by means of VirtualBox under Liinux Devuan (Debian without system D). I downloaded a FreeBSD dvd ISO and constructed a virtual machine for it. When I start the machine as muti-user FreeBSD boots. It finishes with a...
I am looking for a reliable way of getting the IP origin of all pts sessions. The lastutility would be perfect other than it prints the host name and not the ip address. And I cannot see any way to force it to print the numeric address instead. Is there something similar that will?
Hello again! I hope to one day become a venerable FreeBSD admin but until then, I come humbly to the forums seeking knowledge!
So I was trying to build chromium but was running into a compile error that seemed kind of odd, since it didn't seem related to a missing package or a...
I am running FreeBSD 12.2-RELEASE. After I login to GNOME 3, it locks the screen. Then when I enter my password, it says authentication failure. Then when I try and enter my password again, I can't enter my password - I type but nothing shows up.
What could be causing this problem?
Currently I'm running Freebsd 12.1 Release using VMware Fusion on MAC and having problem to log in as regular user

I recently just deleted some files from my users home directory and now right after doing that I cannot login with xdm. The files were .ICEauthority, .login, .login_conf, .profile, and .Xauthority. Will anyone confirm that deleting these files was my problem? (I looked at the contents from a...
I have a MOTD file that has the escape codes to clear the screen as the first line. The idea is that the user is presented with a clean screen and my MOTD.
This is the message of the day...

I have a login banner that is displayed prior to password authentication via SSH.
This is what it currently looks like:

I installed CDE 2.3.1 on 64-bit FreeBSD 12.1 on my laptop. The installation worked well.
After I start CDE and type my name and password correctly, the screen becomes black and it returns to the login screen and same thing happens again. What should I do?

Hi - I have a very strange issue. On my lpatop, I cannot "login" anymore using my standard user and the password as authentication, I believe it is related to the upgrade from 11 to 12.0-RELEASE-p3, but I am unsure. I did not notice immediately since, using a laptop, I have fingerprint...
Is there something I could read to provide the same kind of service as Active Directory on a small network desktop ?
The need is to let users to login any machine and to retrieve an access to their data.
At least, allow them to log to any desktop on the network would be cool.
On my 11.0-RELEASE-p15 system, I've enabled pam_passwdc.so in /etc/pam.d/passwd. (I just uncommented the line, no other settings were changed.) I then created a "testuser" user, and gave it a sufficiently complex password. Logging in as that user and trying to change my password using the...

I used to have a tcsh login script that would set NumLock on for me on login, among other things, however that script has been lost along the media it was on, and I have no idea how I did it.
It was insanely simple, and it didn't rely on anything that came with X.
I'm 100% certain I'm...
