LXDE LXDE Logout

There is a FreeBSD wiki on LXDE

This is what I get when I try to access it:-

Since I have no luck in tracking down the source of the error which is the topic of the post, I decided to make a completely fresh install of FreeBSD and install pkgs one at a time and see how things go.

I first installed xorg and was surprised that twm came up when I ran startx.
That surprised me because I hadn't installed drm-kmod or created a .xinitrc.
Next, I installed lxde-meta. This need an .xinitrc to get lxde started.
That consisted of:-
Code:
xrdb ~/.Xdefaults
exec ck-launch-session startlxde

I also needed to enable dbus at startup.

To my amazement there was no error like the one in the first post and the LXDE logout option produced a full menu with all seven options so have no idea as to how to fix the problem on my other system.

I didn't need to install or configure console-kit but see that console-kit-daemon is installed.

As a further test of this minimal system I installed chromium and that works as expected.

One thing that mystifies me is that xorg works without installing drm-kmod although The Handbook suggests it is required.

I am running this on FreeBSD 15.1 on an old ThinkPad x61 which has 2GB RAM.

The twm window manager is the default when you install X. Look at /usr/local/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.

That's the default if you have no xinitrc.
I've using xorg for a long time and not heard of this file.

It helps a lot in being able to understand things. twm is much less of a mystery now.

graphics/drm-kmod provides the latest video drivers for intel (and AMD as well, if I am not mistaken) and the needed module, e.g. i915kms, is loaded with an entry in /etc/rc.conf. If X loads without that, I suspect it may be falling back on a basic driver like vesa? I think loading the correct video driver can help with video performance, 3d rendering, etc.

graphics/drm-kmod is the metaport that chooses whichever of actual graphics/drm-{515|61|66|612}-kmod, which all are LTS versions, supported by the ${OSVERSION} (comes from __FreeBSD_version defined in /usr/include/sys/param.h) on which the build is done.

graphics/drm-latest-kmod, which is the development version, is NOT automatically chosen. So anyone really need it should deinstall installed one and install graphics/drm-latest-kmod instead.
