hedwards replied to the thread ZFS AnyRaid in ZFS.
It's been a while since I tried, but I thought that only applied when creating a new mirror/array. It might be my memory, but I didn't think that ZFS was so considerate when replacing a failed drive with one that rounded to be a bit shorter.

I recommend a vanilla PC mainboard with AMD Ryzen (probably DDR4 now) that supports ECC memory. Most flexibility, you can plug in a 10 Gb ethernet card or more SATA ports.

In the case of a rounding error of difference, ZFS already does the right thing, as its metaslabs are all the same size, usually 16 GB, so any fractional remainder won't get used and won't cause a problem if the new drive is a few sectors shorter.

Good choice, solid base. Any filesystem would be able to do this. Has very little to do with the filesystem. Gigabit ethernet is probably fast enough. And I'm assuming your home network doesn't have 10, 25, 40 or 100 Gigabit/s switch ports...

Getting python 3.12 on 15.1-RELEASE now. The only problem is that it breaks wee-slack, a program that allows you to use weechat with slack. I opened an issue at wee-slacks github, they generally get things fixed quickly. And probably doesn't...

Is it specifically FreeBSD which you having problems with. If so I would definitely try with the FreeBSD ISO on a Ventoy stick. That might get you further. Also it might be worth trying an mfsBSD ISO.
