Solved ZFS mirror disk won't mount

When checking the status of a mirrored pool on my newly-updated FreeBSD 13.0-p5 system, I found a faulted disk. I know the disk has been working, but since it's been a while since I checked the status, I don't know how long it's been running degraded.

I detached the disk and attempted to re-attach it with zpool attach sys ada1p2 ada0p2, and it told me:

I thought maybe the disk may not be responding, so I compared the smartctl output from ada0 and ada1, and they were comparable. I reran the short test and got no errors.

(ada2 is my boot disk, ada0 and ada1 are the mirrored pool disks). Unfortunately, I didn't run a zpool status before the upgrade to 13.0, so I'm not sure whether this issue may have been present earlier and I just didn't see it.

I was concerned about the GEOM_PART message, so I compared the partition information on ada0 with ada1 and found them to be essentially the same.

I haven't replaced the drive (yet), but given the test results, I'm not convinced that it should be necessary to do so. What can I do to confirm this, and/or where should I proceed from here?

I'm also concerned about the swap configuration warning, and looking for suggestions for how to resolve that.
 
We need some more information to understand the situation. Please show us what you get from:

That first error message "no such pool or dataset" is odd. The implication is that "sys" is not a real "thing".

Sure thing. But first let me say that I ran a non-destructive read test on ada0 which seemed to be able to access the disk with no problems:

I thought it was strange that the grep resulted in "no match", so I went back to run two separate greps, one for each drive. ada1 doesn't show anything suspicious, but ada0 is a different story:

This is very strange, since I KNOW that I've run the zpool status on the pool in the past and saw it indicate both drives. Maybe just not as recently as I thought.

Looks like I need to be a bit more frequently proactive about checking on this system. Once I figure out what is going on.
 
Bingo! Changed fstab to use ada0p1 and ada1p1 as swap and rebooted. Then I attached ada0p2 and zpool status showed ada1p2 and ada0p2 as a mirror, and resilvering is now in progress. swapinfo now looks more sane.

I'm not sure where the fstab entry naming ada0p2 as swap came from. The only thing I can think of is that in the process of some update when configuration files were being updated to current ones that some confusion occurred and the wrong partition got selected.

Hadn't heard this before. Is this mentioned in some documentation I missed, or just common knowledge among people more experienced than I?
 
A lot of the ZFS threads around "best practices" talk about it. Books by various authors recommend it also, not just for ZFS but works for UFS too.
Basically, use gpart to add a label to the partition, then instead of using /dev/ada0p2 you can use /dev/gpt/zfspart1 (where zfspart1 would be the label you gave it using gpart).
Just need to be careful about "geom withering".
When the devices are first detected they can create multiple nodes in /dev.
one is the standard ada0p2 type
one is based on the gpt labels created with gpart that live under /dev/gpt (there is a sysctl to enable/disable this)
one is based on "diskid" that lives under /dev/diskid (sysctl to enable/disable this)

The first exclusive use makes the others disappear. Exclusive use is something like mounting or adding it to a vdev. If you use /dev/ada0p2 when you zpool attach to the vdev, the others go away. If you use /dev/gpt/zfspart1 in the zpool attach, then you don't see /dev/ada0p2.
It's nice using the labels because if you plug something into a different port, ZFS still finds it and works correctly.
If you make your labels smart like say the serial number of the disk, when you need to replace it, you can find it easier.

So the devices that compose the raidz2 VDEV used in the tank pool have their location (L0 means bottom of the stack) and serial number encoded.

So if I ever have to pull a disk, I will be be able to quickly identify which one with a very high level of confidence.
 
Doesn't really help. No messages in there mentioning any specific disk until I detached ada0p2 and started trying to re-attach it, and no sign of any errors.

The /var/log/messages file indicates partition and swap size issues with ada0p2 as far back as 1 January 2021. I believe this was the date on which I installed a new boot disk and did a clean installation of FreeBSD 12.2. I'm going to assume that I somehow managed to specify the wrong swap partition when I did the installation.

This pool was originally built on a FreeNAS server running FreeBSD 11.2-STABLE. I switched to straight FreeBSD in about March 2020, but kept using a pair of USB thumb drives to boot from, as was customary with FreeNAS. After having issues with one of the boot thumb drives, I decided to go to a small SATA SSD as the boot drive.

At any rate, I'm just relieved that the problem is resolved, and I guess at this point it really doesn't matter how long it had been running degraded. I just didn't realize I was on a tightrope without a safety net!

I'll probably play around with the partition labeling suggested earlier.
