Why are FreeBSD users seen as black sheep? (+ thanks)

Hi all,
Recently, I explained why I preferred FreeBSD to Systemd/Linux on a forum. But I received some particularly unpleasant feedback. I don't understand these people's motivations. Why are they attacking my freedom like this?
FreeBSD has jails, but no one is trying to put me in one ;).

Freedom is important. Thanks to all people who make FreeBSD and all BSD alive! Thank you so much for your work. Developers and users. You are real VIP.
 
You should never explain yourself to anyone. What you did would be the same as going to a bunch of Windows users and telling them to switch to Linux. People will shit on you. Also, no one will ever think you are cool and hip because you use <instert any os name here>.
 
I know that. Never used MS-DOS or Windows at home. Only NetBSD (mid-90 up to 2004), GNU/Linux (Gentoo ,Arch) up to 2019 and OSX between 2003 and 2008. I have often been confronted with this kind of remark.
But this time that was on a computer aided music forum where someone asked how to use a particular software (FOSS). One guy asked me why i'm not using systemd/linux or Windows...
The topic was deleted following numerous aggressive messages from people who joined the topic for this very reason.
I was a long time user of this forum and from time to time, some people was not happy with my decision but never that hard.
 
It would be convenient if everybody worked on the same unix-alike and nobody had to think about porting or affordances for any other one that was different. The existence of similar systems is seen as a waste of time, effort, and bandwidth.

Also people are jerks.

In Linux forum you praise another OS.
 
It's good that there are so many operating systems, each good in its own way. You wouldn't wear winter boots in the summer, or drive a Ferrari through a plowed field, would you?

Windows is better for gaming, and FreeBSD for everything else.

It remains a mystery what Linux is for...Oh yeah, Windows 11 runs well on VMware there.

We are not scared easily. But I can imagine what the comments were like.
As to your question about the motivation, do you know about Stockholm Syndrome? That can explain an awful lot, together with the sunken cost syndrome.
 
I'm guessing you told them, in so many words, that Linux was crap or somehow deficient [compared to your favourite OS], which never tends to go down so well.

There are different types of users with different motivations, but there are those who feel wounded when their top favourite software receives a perceived slight. I have seen this quite a lot on Linux related sites, not always specific to Linux itself - you could be talking about e.g. gnome, firefox or some utility and get much the same response from "crazed fans".

Because that's how Linux users are. Not all of them, but there's large group of aggressive Linux stans. They constantly attack and spit on Windows users because, in their opinion, Linux is best at everything and the only good OS. When they came across a BSD user, they didn't hesitate to explain it to you, too. In their usual style.
In short, you haven't encountered this before because you don't use Windows.

Most Linux people do not understand true freedom in principle.

They think 'forced' freedom with GPL is the 'real' freedom - but this is not freedom - its forced ... something trying to be freedom.

BSD people know that real freedom comes without strings attached - hence BSD license.

BSD people are OK with the fact that any company in the World can take the code and then make millions of dollars of profit on it w/o contributing back - Linux people does not understand that - and on the contrary GPL does not 'force' giving back as - for example - VMware took Linux kernel - modified it in ESX/ESXi products and never gave back - and Linux Foundation covered up the problem making VMware NOT giving back anything.
 
The FreeBSD handbook used to have something on their myths page. I can't find it now, but it was

Which is the second best answer to this I think. The best one is what msplsh said, "People are jerks". (Insert political opinion here, "Look how many people voted for <whichever party I hate>")
 
Where is freedom :

1. Use free software like FreeCAD - painful to use and producing non-professional results?
2. Buy a licence for Alibre Design - comfortable to use and producing professional results with drawing time cut in half?

Linux users believe they are masters of IT; they are not. Real freedom is helping others if they ask for it and helping them make their own choices, without coercion. Nowadays, Linux, with its 10^500 distributions, has become a joke and has turned freedom into useless chaos. I used Linux for about 20 years; today I have been using Windows 10 and FreeBSD 13->14 for the past 5 years, and I will never go back to Linux.
 
Try to get a job with FreeBSD
in every job interview I have,I say "I can make a realtime presentation and show you how you can save resources,money,and have a OS fast and clean,not bloatware at all,easy to mantain,secure"
The people are dumb,shi# I can show you!!
but no..
And in terms of choises..well...is imposible change their minds,even if you show that FreeBSD is better of that thing that calling linux today(linux is not linux anymore several years ago)
But..someday linux will become the next windows and all kids see the reality

For a while,when the linux part came out in the chat, he says "no..no..whe dont use linux here" .. he uses windows,so I shut up
So I dont fight with linux and windows kids anymore,is like talking to a wall


update: they fired me today 🤣 , I know that when yesterday in the office the users losts conecttion to internet I'DONT have to
use traceroute,ping,check the gateway and made a report with this junior admin (btw ,no firewall,no proxy,no ACL's only a tplink router)
 
^ freedom isn't convenience and it isn't "free time" left over by some optimal process.

Don't drag Windows into this discussion, especially Windows 10. That is really a bad example for optimal processes and freedom. Windows 10 thinks all of your data is theirs.

Freedom is freedom. Like vermaden says no string attached.
FreeCAD might be painful for you, and it might be good for somebody. Somebody with FreeCAD might get same result over time as you have with your tools.

That opinions exists since linux become popular,more or less when ubuntu share cd and stickers and send to you over the world(still have mine,I am from argentina),in that time was good,debian,gentoo,mandrake or mandriva,etc
There was a good windows alternative,and the time of wallpapers "windows is bulsh## and linux is better"
But today is a joke,windows and linux are becoming the same
 
Actually I don't think Windows and Linux are becoming the same. I would choose Linux over Windows, as at least Linux is "UNIX like", with much of the same software available. Though if I needed Windows for something Linux or FreeBSD can't do, then I would use it. You will often find that even the most hardcore zealots will get Windows installed if certain "real life" stuff just isn't working. I get the impression that many of these don't do much more than browse the web, posting on Linux sites. Hence Linux works for them.

The main problem with Linux is that it's no longer developed by responsible or conscienscious people as a "free OS". Instead it and other associated OSS projects are being funded and steered by the likes of Alphabet, Meta, IBM, Microsoft and AWS. Those aforementioned big players are only interested in how Linux fits a particular businness case - hence the fanbois and zealots you encounter at "derivative of a detivative" fansites aren't even on the radar. Their needs and wants are trampled over regularly.

The new age of Big Tech controlled Linux, has ushered in a new era of deceitful planned obsolence where FOSS projects are being operated in a manner similar to "enterprise", propretary offerings. The strategy seems to be to create a bad reinvention, let the original rot, then through misleading marketing and FUD spreading, force in the bad reinvention, via dependency - with the usual claims of there being options.

It was said years ago, that Red Hat only adopted and proliferated systemd, as it suited their business interests as a paid support provider. I don't believe that's too far off the mark.

The problem is that some people still hark back to the early 2000s, when the Stallmanist and FOSS advocacy was what it was all about - but those days are long gone. Despite GPL, Linux is very much corporate controlled now, (just look at the LF website and the amount of Microsoft love). These fans' rants about the permissive licences, not protecting "freedoms", are so much hot air. Their own favourite OS, sold out well over a decade ago - the irony...

Personal Identity strongly attached to a tool in form of a brand.
When the team is a bit of underdog (Linux), but strong enough, fans can be particularly nasty.
Similar to team sports or politics.
FreeBSD is too much of an oddity. Fans of Linux see it as attack on their feeling of being special anti-system entity, which is their identity...in many cases.
That is why it also attracts underdogs in other walks of life /furry pun intended/.

I mean, in your practical sense, you're saying it's controlled by companies paying people to work on it. This cuts both ways. Does ixSystems control FreeBSD?

Yeah, sure systemd suited RH's interests and RH paid people to work on it. Also, it solved legitimate problems at the cost of things nobody cared about as much as they cared about the entire systems that switched to using systemd. 🤷‍♀️ It could have just been RH's thing and everyone could have ignored it.

Whoever does the work gets to do the driving, so yeah, corpos paying people to do all the work. I mean, anyone's free to fork it and do the work instead!
