Why are FreeBSD users seen as black sheep? (+ thanks)

A BSD licensed, Qt rewrite of gnome-panel would be much more sustainable IMO.

Leave the GTK/GNOME/systemd mess, its shit UX, and its terrible community to Redhat.

My take would be that it is because Linux is the most popular open-source operating system, and computer people like to trash-talk each other about operating systems.

In the 1980s, I worked for a software vendor that made IBM Mainframe software for MVS and VM/CMS. And the MVS and VM/CMS people were constantly bickering about which operating system was better. (My answer was usually "I don't like either one of them very much, but since I've spent over a decade working with MVS internals, I prefer that one").

Fork the project
And then maintain the fork? Given the velocity of changes coming in to Gnome? You and what army?

Systemd is a linux thing. Gnome doesn't require it and will never do. It also runs on other systems.
Sorry to correct you, but Gnome has announced that beginning with the next version of Systemd, there will be more and harder dependencies on Systemd. Look at their blog, a web search will easily find it.

I don't disagree, but if there was enough interest in a systemd free version of Gnome, perhaps it could be done. Changes to Gnome: would they all be relevant to backporting or if they are higher systemd integration, they may not be worth finding alternatives.

The gnome systemd dependence / entanglement isn't new, but it's advancing all the time. The project long ago made it clear that they would ignore bug reports where systemd isn't installed. Seems like a lost cause. The lack of a fork may be due to the necessary manpower that would be involved, to maintain and develop what is a "consumer focused" desktop, for what would be perceived as niche (non systemd Linux, BSDs, etc) use cases, along with general distaste for or indifference towards gnome.

In my view, if you're someone who wants to use gnome, then you're probably someone who can accept systemd/Linux as well. If you're one of those people who rejects systemd, then you will likely have much the same objections/problems with gnome, so I'm not sure why you'd want to use it.

I'm such a black sheep that I'm pro-BSD in a GNU crowd and pro-GNU in a BSD crowd. Or maybe I have an amphibian nature, or maybe I'm Schrödinger's!

Or maybe this is all Therian non-sense...

Anyway, I'm getting old to give a fuck about the labels. :)

Hi all,
Recently, I explained why I preferred FreeBSD to Systemd/Linux on a forum. But I received some particularly unpleasant feedback. I don't understand these people's motivations. Why are they attacking my freedom like this?
FreeBSD has jails, but no one is trying to put me in one ;).

Freedom is important. Thanks to all people who make FreeBSD and all BSD alive! Thank you so much for your work. Developers and users. You are real VIP.
I think your question is rhetorical. I mean come on man, it's Linux! if you haven't drank of the GNU koolaid then you are nothing to them. The brains of BSDers and GNUers function a bit differently from each other.
