Used Sway and River on wayland for 10 months with Arch Linux this year. Wayland is not better / faster than X11.

On both. The dwm tiling window manager, or openbox. If I have to use Wayland, the equivalents, dwl, and labwc. bda65 I used to use spectrwm, and have an ancient page on it, probably 10 years old https://srobb.net/spectrwm.html and I liked it, but wound up with dwm.

I have installed MATE, Gnome 3 and KDE Plasma 6 on two FreeBSD desktop machines. Can choose what to run from sddm greeter. My favorite choice has been MATE mostly, but recently I have moved to Gnome 3.
