Hey, i was wondering what GPUs are natively recognised by FreeBSD. What series are they? Which ones work without problems? I have heard about AMD Radeon RX 6000 & 7000 series working very well, but i'm still unsure. Any advice?
As the support for AMD GPUs in FreeBSD is confusing (well in general), here is an handy table for theoretical support as constructed from Linux Kernel LTS release documentation.
Please remember that:
Only FreeBSD 15.1/16 support DRM 6.12 (more specifically FreeBSD 15 after 1500509 and FreeBSD 16 after 1600018)
FreeBSD 14.x supports DRM 5.15 and 6.1, with a mesa version up to 26.0.x (i.e 26.1.0+ will not work)
As the support for Intel GPUs (integrated or discreete) in FreeBSD is confusing (well, in general), here is an handy table for theoretical support as constructed from Linux Kernel LTS release code.
Please remember that:
Only FreeBSD 15.1/16 support DRM 6.12 (more specifically FreeBSD 15 after 1500509 and FreeBSD 16 after 1600018)
FreeBSD 14.x supports DRM 5.15 and 6.1
FreeBSD 15.0 support DRM 5.15, 6.1 and 6.6
FreeBSD 15.1 supports DRM 5.15, 6.1, 6.6 and 6.12
The currently available firmware package is 20260519
Hello Str4nd3r666 for AMD you can also have pre-gcn cards with the radeon driver (see gentoo support table here), but note that specific cards may not work due to needing work-arounds. If you have a recent AMD (i.e. GCN or RDNA) card please go with FreeBSD 15.1.
Nvidia is what is supported by the upstream drivers, going back to the 470 driver, see the support table here.
For non x86 architectures your best bet, out of the box, is X11 backed by the framebuffer device.
