What are your most frequently used programs?

I am currently running FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE on my systems (All X86_64)

I am curious to know what software other users are using most frequently on their systems.

My most frequently used programs are as follows,

  • LXQT
  • SDDM
  • Qterminal
  • Kate
  • Firefox
  • FileZilla
  • GIMP
  • ffmpeg
  • Mizuma (Epic Games, Urban Terror, LMMS, GOG)
  • Linux-Steam-Utils
  • FileZilla
  • Nano
  • pcmanfm-qt
  • Audacity
  • networkmgr
  • apache24
  • php8.4/8.5
  • ifconfig
  • pkg
  • ncdu
  • du
  • dd
  • zip
  • tarsnap
  • btop
  • htop
  • pavucontrol

There is another post specifically for GUI. But I am interested in programs in general. For

Prior thread on GUI specific programs here,

dwm (starts with feh for a background), alacritty for terminal, tmux, weechat (for using slack at $JOB) vm-bhyve (err, for running vms), bash, mutt, librewolf and waterfox for browsers. I'm sure I'm overlooking some, but those are the ones I use once I wake up and sit at the computer.

usage frequeny in descending order (approximated):
fvwm, vlc (almost permantly for to provide working environment with background music)
xterm (tcsh, I do most of my stuff in the shell (no filemanager installed for years); so: ls, cp, rm, diff, find, head, cat, cut, paste, rsync...not listing everything here) plus several self written scripts used manually on certain tasks, or as cron jobs)
then: firefox (still, yet; spending too much time here in the forums 😁), ding, mpv, vim, zathura, clang, svn, hexyl, lldb, feh, thunderbird (still, yet), pdflatex, VirtualBox (for a few old games on WinXP), xpdf (sometimes instead of zathura), handbrake, ffmpeg

All you need is a kernel, a windowmanager and an xterm and you can start anything else you need.
Now, having a few things on a menu or as dock icons simply for convenience is nice. I've noticed if I switch Windowmanagers I revisit things like menus; example I'm evaluating jwm at the moment, I edited so root menu has:
xterm, mail program (claws-mail), web browser (waterfox or librewolf), darktable, gimp, gnucash

Most frequently?

screen, ls, mc, doas (+ a few aliases which I set up myself), refresh & update (= 2 scripts I made to make it easier to maintain my ports with ports-mgmt/portmaster), git, psql, pkg, python.

Oh, and I also sporadically use a run.sh script to fire up my Minecraft server ;)

CDE, xterm, xeyes, xload, xosview, firefox, openoffice, geany, make, avr-gcc, git, ...

LibreQuest : Do you planned to extract some statistical data ?
Essentially, yes. I just know there are so many points of view and use cases among the forum users.

Also, there are always some programs I am unaware of and I thought it would be good for other forum users to show what programs they find useful.

I recently noticed an update for fresh was pushed out and noted on freshports. Fresh is a full featured tui IDE I hadn't previously known about. This made me naturally curious about what other great programs others may be using.

But I also know there is the laptop initiative ongoing currently with the freebsd foundation. So this was another reason I was curious about the users here and what types of programs are being used that are most frequently used and wether they tend to be GUI vs TUI.

In the future a thread topic such as this could, with participation, trend more towards GUI or TUI.

Basically, I am just curious. 😁
