Yes, that's exactly how it is with cats! But when it comes to devotion, they can rival dogs. When we were renovating my son's apartment, we brought a cat home for almost a year. She was very bored. She kept looking out the window, wondering if the owner would come...at first, she refused to eat...

We had Luna, Pembroke Corgi. She was like a human. Now is 4 years when she passed away and we didn't decided for another dog.
She was old 14 years. But my nephew had a beagle and he was 21 years old when he left the planet Earth.
Our Luna and his beagle never ate dog food. They ate what we did and what we cooked for them.

Adopted, brother and sister from another mother and father 😁 Ocean beach is their playground and food is what they live for. Other than that, they're unconditional friends and always in good mood.

We had two German Shepherds that we raised from puppies. Bella and Jasmine look identical, except Jasmine has a white stripe down her muzzle. When the dogs were about a year old, a neighbor was looking for a dog. He was a retired K-9 trainer for a police department. He had two kids, and one GSD, who was very attached to one of the kids. He needed a dog for the other kid. We were having trouble because whenever there was a disturbance Bella and Jasmine would get each other so worked up that they would end up barking and growling at each other, instead of the potential intruder. So we decided to re-home Jasmine with the neighbor, who lived a couple blocks away.

A few weeks later, both Jasmine and the existing GSD disappeared from the neighbor's yard in the middle of the night. We assumed that they were stolen. The other dog returned in the middle of the night a couple of days later, but Jasmine was still missing.

About a week later, we heard Bella barking in the middle of the night, sounding like she was having a conversation with a distant dog that sounded just like her. The next morning, Jasmine was back in her yard.

I know that dogs are smarter than we realize, and I wonder: Was Bella talking to Jasmine? Was she giving her directions, or advice on how to escape, or boosting her confidence so she could escape? I talked to a dog behavioral expert who insists that dogs do not have conversations. My own experience is that it is not unusual to hear a GSD barking at night with it's distinctive woo-woo-woo bark, and then a distant GSD barking with the woo-woo-woo bark, like they are taking turns. I don't know what they are doing, but it sure seems like a conversation (or maybe they're singing a call-and-response dog song?).

In any case, Bella is still with us in Belize and is a lively nine years old. The kid grew up, and Jasmine is living happily with him in New Mexico. Every year on Jasmine's birthday, he sends me a video of her. She looks happy and spoiled.

I love GSDs.
 
I have that problem with the cats (we have four, as well as the two GSDs). They like to climb up on the desk and walk on the keyboard. So I got a keyboard protector, a U-shaped piece of Plexiglass that covers the keyboard and allows just barely enough room for me get my fingers in and type. The cats were ecstatic: A posing stand! Now my cats don't type stuff into my computer, but since they are not transparent, I am getting a neck ache from moving my head around trying to look around them and see the screen.
 
Most cats won't look you directly in the eyes... apart from my sister's cat, Lulu. That cat will gaze longingly directly into your eyes for as long as she likes. Sadly I don't have a photo. She also likes lying stretched out on the table for an extended stroking and purring love-in session, and the occasional tail-twitching game. 😁
