Why do people post these things? On stupid reddit I used to see people post screenshots of the boot screen, which was the exact same thing on everyone's computer. Is it supposed to have some meaningful proof of life?

Only "old" HP hardware, Z600 + Zbook 15G3, running only FreeBSD, used for programming.

I am very proud of this setup. It is perhaps a twenty-year-old dream coming true today. I am writing my own small operating system for AVR microcontrollers on a high-end computer running real Unix. FreeBSD rules and rocks

That's a nice desk. I like the breadboard prototyping setup. What is the small black box with the keypad above the keyboard? Is that a calculator or something else? Maybe a device programmer?

It's real. Some of the guys on our test floor have made some real works of art. On the other hand... the "big almighty mess" racks are in plentiful supply too!

Yeah, if I take a photo of mine, I'll have to clean it up a bit, and then I won't know where anything is. On the other hand... it's about time I sorted it out...

Hah, it wouldn't be classed as a workstation if it wasn't verging on being a health hazard.

That said... I am in a similar position; hence why I haven't contributed yet either.

My own desk looks like that, too. But this thread actually does provide some motivation to spend time and effort to clean my own desk - it's amazing what one can actually accomplish (instead of just dreaming/fantasizing) if they organize their ass off.

No, just a CASIO graph 100+ calculator. It makes me think I should replace it with an HP one
(you know, for the sake of consistency...)

At least they are working on ROCm this year, which was on my wishlist for FreeBSD for awhile now... and recently, it looks like it's possible to program GPU kernels in Rust.

An old laptop running mate + numix-gtk-theme + numix-icon-theme + lightdm, customized so that a Windows user would barely notice he's using FreeBSD, so wouldn't complain about the change.

I don't know what exactly you mean with "theme".
in your ~/.fvwm/myfvwm.config you add a wallpaper with

+ I Exec exec fvwm-root -r $HOME/.fvwm/Wallpapers/abstract-orange-6240x1920.png

and change the colors as you like:

There is also way more you can define/modify yourself, like the window's decorations, or the windows title buttons, see my post #19

It is simply one config file in the .fvwm folder. See the attached file.

Nice. Does your Desktop setting/Wallpaper works? I am experiencing some problems, was hoping it is just .config permissions issue but suspect there is a bug in XFCE4 - some mention on xfce forums for slackware and freebsd from year ago.

I remember having that issue before but I don't remember what it was.
Try to launch it from a terminal and you may get some errors to look at, I think it was how I got to find the issue and fix it.

It does not. It stays the same as you see in the picture, or if left idle for long enough the screen goes black.
