Show Your FreeBSD Workstation (Specs + Screenshot)

Why do people post these things? On stupid reddit I used to see people post screenshots of the boot screen, which was the exact same thing on everyone's computer. Is it supposed to have some meaningful proof of life?
 
Aww man, you're such a spoilsport. It's just a bit of fun, you know? Not everything has to be 100% serious, all of the time? ;)
Anyhow, it's always interesting seeing how other people have built their desktops, ahd how they're using their systems, and there's some creativity involved. Plus, every time I see someone using windowmaker or fvwm, it gives me a little boost. :-)

If the hardwares are in exactly the same configuration, would be.
But differences in hardwares, OS versions and installed softwares cause differences on boot screen. So full dmesg (even NOT verbose boot) could be helpful for others to choose hardwares to run FreeBSD.
So sysutils/hw-probe exists.
 
Think yourself lucky, it could be photos of server racks ... and the cabling round the back... although that could be interesting too. There's some nice cabling in this shot. Not that I want to start a trend... 😂

For real artistry, you need to see ethernet, power, and fibre cabling with some fibre switches, all in the same rack. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to take a camera in to take photos, or I would show you.

When I was designing computers at the chip level, I would hand the schematic over to a PCB tech who had a Gerber CAD system and let him do the layout with my layout instructions. One thing I didn't catch was three driver chips--they only had in and out pins--that he placed backwards. It was an expensive (then) 4-layer board and, when I caught the error, my groan was heard by Frank.

Frank was maybe 20 years older than me and one of the technicians. He said, "Let me take a look at it and see what I can do."

I went to the bathroom and sat in a stall for a few hours. When I came out, Frank handed me the board with a bunch of fine wires neatly bundled like a work of art. I plugged the thing in and it worked like a charm. Frank was a humble artist and a technician.
 
Yeah, I've worked with technicians like that. Unsung heroes. I worked with one guy who was a master of hand-building and tuning miniature microwave waveguides. They always worked.

Stuff that looked a bit like this, but I remember strange little metal plates and other weird looking bits inside the tube; I remember steel or aluminium, not brass. I have no idea how it works, sets up standing waves, maybe. They did a lot of work with uwave comms. That was a long time ago, when I was programming x86 assembler.

I'm nowhere on this. Everything in a $40 ATX case with nothing in the front panel, and it's a i9 13900K. 😆

It would perhaps be more fun if people posted photos of their physical workstations. Perhaps a good mix of ex-work machines, duct tape and repurposed server hardware.

I do this with some of my very ancient motherboards. They are too delicate to squash into a case and the MTBF means it isn't quite worth digging it all out again.

That sounds good.
But I also like to see how everyone organizes their workspace on the desktop and what design they choose.

I think you can just skip this forum thread if you’re not interested. It’s off‑topic, and we’re just having fun.
And I already said, I’m interested in seeing what kind of design people choose for their work systems.
Fortunately, there’s room for imagination here.
You can even imagine the personality of the desktop’s owner based on the chosen design.
It would be interesting to take a look at your desktop ;)

I deleted what I wrote cause I thought this was another new startup of this same topic and I already replied earlier but my thoughts are all the same. Everywhere you go people post screenshots of the same thing over and over and over again and it serves no purpose and nothing is to be gained.
