Share your illumOS experience for FreeBSD users

I run USL SVR4 4.0.4 on my vintage gear with excitement; it brings me joy. Self-hosting SVR4 is fun. FreeBSD is an awesome SCSI target for SVR4, especially with a RAIDZ backing store.

I believe you're right, if memory serves me NCR Unix was SVR4.2. What I meant with my post it that it was a direct derivative from AT&T SVR4 and it was actually marketed as AT&T-NCR. I started with the company in 1997 but they were using those machines for many years, judging from the dust mice inside.
 
many years ago at an ISP I had to connect a Linux server of mine to a storage provided over iscsi, but with no success.
I remember installing openindiana just to test this connection and everything worked flawlessly from the first try :)
 
I have been meaning to try illumos someday, I just don't know which distro to choose. I am interested in the idea of just formatting a disk in whatever format illumos uses, then just building illumos-gate and running pure illumos. I looked through the src tree, it is a full-ish system, much more than just a kernel, and from the looks of it, it seems like it could actually function somewhat. I guess you could call my idea "UNIX-from-scratch". In the meantime, I just need a recommendation on which distro I should use.
