Solved Problem with cursor keys

I have recently noticed some strangeness with cursor keys.

This strangeness is manifested by the down and left keys only moving one position when I hold those keys continuously, ie if I want to get to the bottom of a file or move to the leftmost position I need to press the keys repeatedly to move a single position either up or left . With down or right I can to keep my finger on the key and the cursor goes to top of file or beginning of line until I release the key.

Does anyone understanding what I mean and maybe have an explanation for why this is happing?

This is 100% reproducible with my keyboard when I eat while programming. No more Doritos for you and a cleaning out the crumbs should work. Flip it, shake it, gross out.
:)

Test it in a plain terminal. Hold an arrow key and see if it keeps repeating. If not, check your keyboard or system settings. If it works there but not in your editor, it’s likely an editor or terminal config issue.

The problem only occurs in X. Under text mode keys work normally.

Having just tried this again, I was mistaken or I fixed it temporarily and broke things again.

Under both X and text mode UP and RIGHT work normally but DOWN and LEFT need the cursor to be be tapped for every single movement.

I don't see anything which might control this.

Any suggestiions?

Give your keyboard a vacuum. Probably got crumbs stuck under keys. Turn keyboard upside down and knock the back a few times so the crumbs fall out.

You could simulate a function key with x11/xdotool to find out if it's a physical problem.

Code:
xdotool key Down

Sends a down press to the active window. Use sleep to have time to switch to the window that should receive the keyboard input.

AI suggested I look at /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d and sure enough I had been messing around with it trying to enable Polish characters.

This is what broke things, don't know why.

Code:
Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "Keyboard Defaults"
    MatchIsKeyboard "on"
    Option "XkbLayout" "pl"
    # Optional: uncomment one of the variants below if needed
    # Option "XkbVariant" "qwertz" # traditional Polish
Option "XkbVariant" "programmer" # programmer’s layout
EndSection

Restoring this got my cursor keys working properly.

Code:
SectSection "InputClass"
Identifier "All Keyboards" MatchIsKeyboard "yes" Option "XkbLayout" "gb, pl" Option "XkbOptions" "grp:ctrls_toggle" EndSection
