PF pf Hardware

I hope this is the right forum for this...

Just wondering if anyone is running a Raspberry Pi 5 with dual gigabit ports and pf. Been thinking about minimizing/updating my current almost 15yo Mac Mini running pf and RP5's form factor is appealing. I am NATting and have relatively simple pf rules. Throughput that I am looking for is a bit more than 1GB but less than 2GB, not sustained but burstable.

If you there is a similar mini-PC form factor that you are using, I would also like to hear about it and the performance you are getting from it.

Thank y'all!

hi mate

like you i used a mac mini as a router with pf for a while

i got this little box about 5 years ago and installed pfsense
and its been running without any issues at all

You will need to use x2 USB3 ethernet adapters 2.5GBps. I wouldn't recommend you to use any USB for networking.

Thank you! I am leaning towards a box just like that.

I can also recommend mini PCs with a lot of NICs. I have a few of them on remote sites.
There is some notifications you need to take care when choosing a box.

  • Are you consider to run pfSense? Look at Netgate hardware. They cost more, but they work, better updates etc. If you are running FreeBSD, then a mini PC is the choose.

  • Avoid mSATA SSD disk. Many have PCIe disk (which is the way to go, or standard 2.5” SSD), but you can find old stock mSATA mini PCs on the market for less money which can be tempting. I have burn a looooot of mSATA in small FW. Never use them again.

  • Consider a bigger SSD even if you don’t need it! A bigger SSD have better TBW. You just save some headache.

  • New models of mini PCs may have NICs that is not supported by default in FreeBSD.

  • Fan-less is nice, but they run hot. I always have a 120mm fan on top (reduced speed a lot – no noise). This save the life on the mini PC.
