Movies (and TV shows)...

I agree that a trailer is usually more informative than IMDB. But, I'm no movie buff, and IMDB might have more information for those who can tell a director's or actor's style. And as I type, I realize I haven't seen too many movies I'd share here, most of my stuff is usually mind candy, good for a bit of amusement and then forgotten. The exceptions are usually some Japanese movies my wife brings home but the two I just thought of posting here are only available if you get the DVD from Amazon it seems. And also (like me) pretty old. :)

1) You are right: Trailer + IMDB will be from now on, on my part.
2) I (and many others) like mind candy. Don't be shy to share it.
3) There are people from all the world here (and very resourceful), so I think any movie in the history of world movies (which includes American movies) is fair game. However obscure the movie is, someone might be able to see it in their country.

Ok. Here's a Japanese film. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455577/

kame wa igai to hayaku oyogu

Youtube calls it, Turtles are Fast Swimmers, I'd add in Surprisingly Fast, but it doesn't matter.

My wife asked me to watch it, I thought I'd be bored, but I loved it. When describing it to a friend I said, The best way to describe it is quirky. It's from 2005, and I don't think the trailer does it justice.

For me, there were a lot of laughing out loud moments.

Did you watch
Kurosawa: Seven samurai

fernandel, Yes, that's a classic. I saw it quite awhile ago, when I was still doing martial arts. One of my favorites of his was Yojimbo. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055630/

I saw many of the Kurosawa films long before I met my wife. Living in NYC (though at that time, probably in Brooklyn), as I was learning Japanese, I had many Japanese friends, some of them movie buffs, and there were various theaters that would have showings of known and not so well known, Japanese films, and my friends would often invite me along.

A Fistful of Dollars was almost a shot for shot remake of Yojimbo. I think Kurosawa sued Sergio Leone. Just did a quick web search and yes he sued, they settled by Leone allowing Kurosawa full rights to show the film in Japan where it was called The Return of Yojimbo

After my wife and I started dating, she'd take me to artistic films, which usually weren't as interesting to me.

My first Japanese movie was Onibaba very long time ago :). I like Kurosawa and I saw many movies too and Return of Yojimbo too.

It's probably hard to figure Dr Who out, unless you saw the original programmes as a 6 year old, hiding behind the sofa when the daleks came on. 😁
Dr Who - you are like them or you are hate them. There are no other options. I think I saw so so many...but I didn't miss any episode of The Black Adder.

In Catalonia, The Black Adder ("L'escurçó negre" in Catalan) was shown on the public regional TV channel (translated into Catalan) and became a social phenomenon. Everybody watched it.

Black Adder--darn you fernandel now I have the theme song in my head. Did you set me up with a "clever plan?" Scenes of it are running through my head now. "That's not a head. That's a pumkin".
drhowarddrfine, how did you like that movie? I expected it to be overly arty, and within 15 minutes was laughing my head off. I though the funniest part was Yuu Aoi (playing Ogitani) showing up with her hair all frazzled after getting shocked. But the whole thing was fun. Do you agree with my "quirky" assessment? :)

In the 80's I read Eji Yoshikawa's book on Musashi. As far as I can tell, it's more historical fiction than biography---It's a long book and I've seen it divided into several shorter paperbacks. Anyway, at the time I thought, Gee a young Mifune would be perfect for this. Soon after, I went to the video store--we rented VHS tapes back then, and saw there were three movies, called in the US, Samurai I, II and III. Starring Mifune as Musashi, in a story very much based on the novel.

Here's the IMDB for the first one--anyone interested should be able to find the other two. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047444/ There's a trailer available on the page.
