After setting the modesetting driver, X.org does not start (using startx) before the i915kms had been loaded into the kernel (kld_list="i915kms" in /etc/rc.conf).

The pixel-stepped image copied and pasted in the posts from xfce4-terminal has nothing to do with the i915kms.ko and loading the correct driver.

Bottom line​

Is this the bottom line, answer to the question in the post overall: add Driver "intel" or Driver "modesetting" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf . Then see if anti-aliasing can be set on from the xfce4-terminal (to-do) and read the Handbook section 5.6.3 about the fonts (to-do).

Any further help is of course appreciated.

escape out of curiosity, do you get the same behaviour when using xlibre? I'm asking because the implementations are not 1:1 and in the past I had issues with driver loading in xlibre that didn't happen on xorg (but currently I don't have any issues).

Here is a zoomed screenshot of lightly rendered text. The "anti-aliasing" setting is in the desktop settings.

It looks like the case can be closed.

After changing the driver to 'modesetting', the screensaver does not jam the operating system anymore. In later versions (<14) and using 'intel', it was necessary to press key combination <CTRL><ALT><F5> and then <CTRL><ALT><F9> to get back to the desktop. In 15.1-RELEASE and using 'modesetting', any keypress opens the screen normally. It is confusing what has been improved.
