Improve Your ChatGPT FreeBSD Queries

But I am not sure that AI will surpass the human brain in SEMANTICS.
I think that was a good argument that was teased out. Yeah, there are things that AI is good for. But yeah, semantics are something that I just don't see AI really catching on. You can automate a lot of decision-making and distill them to a mathematical equation that even an AI can understand. And yeah, that's convenient. But semantics are like deciding how to ultimately react, and whether the decision (or right to even decide) even belongs to you or not. An AI can't help with THAT, it can only oversell the benefits of going either way - because ultimately, there's someone who programmed it with rules.

AI/LLMs have been hugely beneficial to my FreeBSD experience, but you'll notice that responses bias significantly towards Linuxisms. You can overcome this somewhat by specifying obvious opening tags like: "In FreeBSD {command, config, system, /etc}, how/why/do {X,Y, and/or Z}. POSIX preferred"

But if you want to massively improve the response quality and avoid Linuxisms, upload the relevant manpages. Not copy/pasted as text, but as a file. Upload your config file too. I've found improved quality responses with statements like:
  • Take a look at the manpage and let me know if you can find {options, syntax, explanations, etc}
  • Be careful not to make things up. Read the manpage carefully, and let me know if there is any clarity regarding {Y}
  • [Copy/pasting terminal output with diagnostic errors]
  • Are you completely sure about that? Can you double check the manpage because I thought that {Z}, but I'm not totally sure.
  • It's okay if you dont know. If you need the manual for {command} or additional reference material, I can provide that.
Another important note is conversation management. If the thing starts hallucinating early on and making mistakes, scrap the thread and try again, or else it's likely to just keep on faulting. Adjust your opening verbaige to avoid the original errors. Conversely, I've found that threads can get into a sweet spot, where the AI understands the assignment.

Interested in what other tips some of you have found for improving AI/LLM experience. Personally I used Claude.

EDIT: I dont know why so many people interpret this to mean the exclusion of reading the manual and handbook for yourself. At no point did or would I ever suggest such a thing, and anyone who accuses me implying that, isnt operating on good faith.

Thanks for good ideas.

I have the same issues with ChatGPT:

Yes, AI can calculate something in a table, a database very quickly. But, again, I don’t need such “garbage” redundancy at the output, which AI can generate and give out.
In the world of money, some managers foist off some product on other managers under the guise of trademarks.
Huge tranches are allocated for AI. Funds are created for AI. There are millions of euros, dollars, pounds sterling, marks, zlotys, yuan, etc. These are budget money. This is our money. The state gives money, but RESPONSIBILITY for the result is minimal! This is the same program as, in part, NASA: “We have invested millions of dollars in this space program. We will bring you a prototype of space dust and garbage!” This is a success! Stupidly squandering a lot of money on dust... well, of course, the beneficiaries will bite off millions from this program. Most people will be left, at best, with a MUSEUM EXHIBIT in the form of a sealed flask with stones that were collected in the vastness of Colorado...
Who can you hold responsible for what? This is a scheme for laundering, whitening budget money. This is a pure scam.
Recently they showed “photographs” of some galaxies, nebulae from the Hubble telescope. Well, this is the BOTTOM. What did I see? A picture drawn by AI on commercial super-software, processed through hundreds of filters. As they themselves write - the distance to these galaxies is millions of light years. :))) Those who have taken a SCHOOL course in physics, mathematics and astronomy understand perfectly well that at SUCH distances a REAL photos (in the traditional sense) will not look SO glamorous and glossy...

The effectiveness of AI? On the one hand, “yes”, on the other, “no”. Is the dictionary in Google Translate or the spreadsheet that sorts cells effective? Yes, very effective. But nothing more. AI adds some abstract “garbage level” (“crutch”) that props up our brain.

Maybe I’m a bit dumb and outdated, but for now this is the only way I can explain it all.

So, if we simplify the formula, then “AI = calculator + dictionary”.

If you think about it, grep can go through a gigabyte of text way faster than you can through a 3-inch thick paper dictionary.

There's kind of a reason why the computing situation evolved towards AI in the first place.

Glam and gloss are for people who have the money, but not education.

There's kind of a reason why huge distances don't look very nice on pictures - and it's difficult to know much about about them unless you have some education. Somebody on these Forums once said (and I'm paraphrasing, not quoting): The more you know about one single thing, the less you know about everything else.

The specialist learns more and more about less and less until, finally, he knows everything about nothing; whereas the generalist learns less and less about more and more until, finally, he knows nothing about everything.”
