Gnome desktop not available after pkg upgrade

I updated via pkg my FreeBSD desktop yesterday. This was a small update and basically included the upgrade to the latest versions of gnome-shell (41.3), gdm (41.3_2) and mutter(41.3). The initial problem manifested itself when the screen locked, then I discovered that I was unable to unlock it. I then rebooted the system and then discovered that although it recognised the default user there was no password field so was unable to access the gnome desktop.

To get the system working again I rolled back to some older packages
  • gnome-shell-41.0_1
  • gdm-3.28.4_6
  • mutter-41.1_1
A Google search discovered that Debian users were also having similar problems with their upgrade to gnome-shell 41.3

The only errors that I found in the messages log that may be relevant were: This series of errors were repeated until I reverted to the earlier packages

Code:
Feb 13 07:51:26 Ruru gdm[2481]: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.756608 seconds

Is anyone else experiencing this issue or know of a solution?

I had GDM and GNOME on a desktop computer, which stopped working a couple of days ago after an upgrade. After the upgrade, GDM would show up, but would crash X when the password is entered.

Unfortunately, I did not investigate this issue as I was intending to replace GNOME; which I did, soon after experiencing this issue.
