Solved failed, ports update everything

what does this mean???
Code:
portmaster <flags> <------
<flags> the last time I tried this it did not work either.
I am trying to just upgrade v12 -> v12.1 on this laptop, and I got as far as this.
Code:
# freebsd-update install
Installing updates...
Completing this upgrade requires removing old shared object files.
Please rebuild all installed 3rd party software (e.g., programs
installed from the ports tree) and then run "/usr/sbin/freebsd-update install"
again to finish installing updates.
root@FreeBSD12.net:/home/userx
now when I did this command I found by googling.
Code:
portmaster -af
it failed .. so not I am stuck, it is save to turn off laptop and pick it up on the morrow?

what does this mean???

To me, it means that since you're trying to upgrade the base system from 12.0 to 12.1 and are going to have to rebuild all installed programs from the ports tree, it would be better to install 12.1 and rebuild your programs on a fresh build. Then you could start from a clean slate.

That's what I would do and rest assured I'd have a fully functional, stable desktop in the end just like always. I have never upgraded to the next version and always do a full rebuild of the system. Most problems you see people experience come up during an upgrade.

In what way did it fail? What error message?

You aren't in deep trouble but we need more info.
all of the output is gone, it basically went through the I'm getting list of what needs to be updated, and then it tells me what, which is / was a very long list, which of course I said yes to, it starts then as it is runningit stops says fix the issue then run portmaster again using that file it creates, and does not say what or why it crashed in order to know what to fix.

https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/portmaster-keeps-prompting-to-delete-packages.68813/
I got portmaster.rc set to look for packages first.

that file it says to use to start only has this within it

could I delete all of that then start over without having to just wipe this install and do a fresh install of 12.1?

I'll run this again.

that is just freaky ..... so nothing to worry about , now?? it is save to reatach my AMD video drive in rc.conf?
Code:

I commented it out just for safety. I didn't want it to lock up just beause it is trying to load that, so I let it use default video driver

What happened is ports-mgmt/pkg failed for some reason and portmaster won't continue with any of the others till you fix it. Just do portmaster -f pkg and see what happens. No, you won't break anything.

most of my stuff, if I remember correctly is pkg and not ports on this one (install).

Everything is a package in the end. Ports build packages and it's those that eventually get installed.

Everything is a package in the end. Ports build packages and it's those that eventually get installed.
yeah, my understanding is to build it off ports is to curtail it to the system, whereas install pkg it is generic in nature, but chances are still works.

the thing here I think and am not really worried about, is that it deletes the pkg pkg and dies without rebuilding. it may have to do with the conf in how I got it setup. to pull latest pkg first before building it from ports.

yeah, my understanding is to build it off ports is to curtail it to the system, whereas install pkg it is generic in nature, but chances are still works.
The only real difference is that pkg(8) installs a pre-compiled package. Ports build packages from source. But effectively both ways end up as an installed package.

Yes it is but that's not the point he's trying to make.
i get the point, I also get that to compile by source in leu of pkg it curtails the software to the system that is running the software. ie
the i915kms driver. It having to be build from scratch and not from pkg install on upgrading from 12 -> 12.1 .

The ports get compiled on someone else Computer and it gets build in a wide generalized array of pc types, (I assume), because that would be the best way to do mass produce software in order to try and make the software as compatible as possible to everything out there that is running FreeBSD, (etc..).

but as we see this is not always the case so one needs to compile it using ports in leu of using pkg to install it.

I prefer to use pkg over ports, and port only when I feel it is needed, and not all software needs to be compiled from source on ones own system in order to get it to work properly. I'd think this is where gentoo fails in its conception, having the user have t build everything from scratch all of the time for everything? but that is "Linux/GNU" , I am just pointing out the ideology and using Geetoo to do so. Because its entire system is build off that ideology.

Having binary packages to install is faster over all causing it so one does not have to live by Geetoo I got way too much time on my hands so I'll just compile everything from source at the time I need it then put myself into a wait state until the software has completed compiling before I can actually use it, might as well go shopping, or take a nap while I am waiting for it to compete ideology.

That ideology collapses in on itself. Because it is not absolutely needed to compile every peice of software on ones own system to get it to work on that same system.
