Casting to TV

Is there any way to enable casting from an application to a TV screen?

Chromium allows me to cast specific tabs to the TV. I have a Chromcast device attached to the TV which Chromium is able to identify.

I have no idea how all this black magic works, but nice to have it available.

Anyone know of any way to cast multimedia/vlc to TV?

It seems to have lots of plugins and extensions. Maybe a 'cast' option is available....

Ooh look....

FAQs

How do I cast from VLC to my smart TV without Chromecast?
You don’t necessarily need a Chromecast dongle to cast VLC to your TV. Some televisions have an internally built Chromecast, which VLC player will detect when your smart TV is on.
Can VLC cast to Chromecast?
Yes, VLC Media Player supports all Chromecast devices.

Except that this does not seem to work in the FreeBSD build.

Instead of cast how about stream video like rtsp:// from vlc to TV. Is it networked?
I don't anything about rtsp, but always willing to learn.

Just checked the TV and see that it is networked. It also has a Google TV dongle connected.

Does the TV have any applications? You need a browser to use a rtsp://address.
You setup VLC to stream rtsp. Then on TV point to machine with VLC running as streaming server.
rtsp://192.168.1.999:8090/stream

RTSP is probably not the best choice for streaming audio and video.
It is used in many IP Cameras and Security DVR applications.

Look at some of the other options including IceCast and HTTP

Start small frame size and low bit rate and work your way up to HD.
Transcoding eats up CPU cycles. You might want to pre-encode to TV optimal size and rate..
Let VLC just do streaming.
