“CAM status: Auto-Sense Retrieval Failed” with Norelsys NS1081

Ī̲ tried to install 14.0 (namely, FreeBSD-14.0-CURRENT-amd64-20230120-43703bc489ec-260163-memstick.img) from a memory card inserted into Norelsys NS1081 cardreader. More precisely, into a USB-C multi-functional adapter connected to a desktop PC via a USB-A/USB-C connector and having (among other things) that Norelsys NS1081 on board.
The installer miserably failed with
Code:

(da0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): fatal error, failed to attach to device
The worst thing is that Norelsys should provide access to the root partition, so Ī̲ don’t even have any working FreeBSD system at this stage.

My USB-C multi-functional adapter never failed with Linux.

Ī̲ am able to read (and understand) docs, so any suggestion along the lines of “try blah-blah kernel boot variable” is welcome… and Ī̲ realize that can clone the installer’s UFS partition (or even the whole installer image) onto another medium, thanks. Also, should Ī̲ try another flavor of BSD; does it make sense?
