I have not accustomed to Gimp in 20 years.
I have used Photoshop from version 5 to CS2. Ver5 I installed, opened and started clicking around. Everything that happened was logical. Very soon I could do everything regarding image composition and layers, cutting, constructing images out of pieces was very easy.
Before that I had limited affairs with Corel Photo Paint and Paint Shop Pro. Both I've found OK, I could find my way around but not like in Photoshop.
In the very beginning there were Paintbrush-alike programs like Dr.Halo, Deluxe Paint, up to my favourite, Neosoft Neodraw. Those are just simple drawing programs, everyone including children can tackle. I found Photoshop to be this, with better UI, with layers and effects functionality.
Everytime I fire up GIMP I can't operate it without googling, not even the simplest things. I just wanted to make a meme out of three images and some text - all the images on the web, the meme template, two images I should insert, and then paste on some text. Well I couldn't easily resize the images I've pasted. In Photoshop as far as I recall, I can immediately size the layer, move it. Here I found in the toolbar how I can move it, but not resize it. I googled and the answers were two/three different things all in 3/4 steps like click here, open this.
First, am I stupid or missing something?
But I don't believe to be completely oblivious, the only notable fork of Gimp that existed was Gimpshop exactly in the 00s, to reshuffle Gimp to look and behave like Photoshop.
Second question, what is the influence for Gimp's UI and workflow? Why exactly is it so different from the leading commercial product?
