Cause: CUPS was configured to use IPv4 addresses. LPD was configured to use domain names. A change to the printer addresses and to DNS allowed LPD to work and broke CUPS.
Solution: Reconfigure printers in CUPS to use IPP to printer domain names.
I am seeing this in lpstat -p -d -R:
On one of our hosts the /etc/printcap file contains this definition for a network printer:
np4174|Lexmark MS711dn Forwarding:sd=/var/spool/lpd/np4174:lf=/var/log/lpd_errors:rm=np4174.hamilton.harte-lyne.ca:rp=printers/np4174.hamilton.harte-lyne.ca:sh:
The printcap page says this:
I'm trying to make my new printer Epson L1210 working under FreeBSD (TrueNAS). It works fine under Linux (Fedora 35). I was following this guide https://www.freshports.org/print/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr but `lpinfo -v` returns list without my printer. Printer is connected via USB. I...
Since I have just received the following feedback from upstream concerning the addition of a PPD + patch to rastertolabel.c to CUPS:
and LPrint - A Label Printer Application not being available as a FreeBSD port yet, I'd like to ask if anyone is willing and able to have a look, as that would...
I'm receiving a MUNBYN ITPP941 label printer next week, and as it turned out, it's one of the most common label printers available globally under at least three different brand names (Beeprt, Rollo, Munbyn).
There is a Linux CUPS driver package available for download...
So print/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr is available as a port, but not print/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr2, which newer Epson printers require.
The current RPM source package from the Epson website: epson-inkjet-printer-escpr2-1.1.32-1lsb3.2.src.rpm
Anyone willing and able to port that one, which...
I am looking for a multifunction printer that works flawlessly under FreeBSD, mainly for office use.
Desired features are:
LAN connectivity with embedded print server
Duplex printing with CUPS support
Duplex scanning with SANE support
Laser vs ink not decided yet
Color vs black & white not...
I am wondering if it is possible to use a Linux printer driver for CUPS that contains a filter program binary in FreeBSD.
Specifically this is about the MUNBYN ITPP941 label printer for which the Linux CUPS driver can be downloaded here.
That driver consists of a Beeprt.ppd and a...
I did a fresh installation of FreeBSD (FreeBSD 12.2-RELEASE-p6 FreeBSD 12.2-RELEASE-p6 GENERIC amd64). I try to install a printer by the Web interface and it fails:
This site can’t be reached
192.168.1.108 unexpectedly closed the connection.
CUPS's error_log show this:
I seem unable to get printing via Cups work.
What I have done so far:
Installed cups after pkg update upgrade.
Set up the printer (same settings as on Linux, where it just works).
Manufacturer-supplied PPD file is installed in the printer config.
I am unable to print, getting the error "cannot...
I have been having problems getting LPD to work on FreeBSD 12.0 . I must admit it has been some years since I have used LPD specifically for printing but I have spent quite a lot of time trying to get this working on bare metal and virtual machines and I consistently get the same result.
Well the wife is nagging me to buy a printer because the kids are in school and printing has become pretty much necessary. So over the next week or two or three I really should buy something. Happy wife happy life. :p I've been reading through the multiple discussion post so I think I got...
Having bought a HPLaserjetP1102w, I'm now trying to make it work through print/hplip, instead of LPD, in order to have better support, more features, easy-to-use interface, etc....(also beacuse using lpd, I've never managed to make my old Epson perform really well if dealing with...
I have been trying to configure a Lexmark e260DN for use with a workstation I built with FreeBSD 10.3
I've been struggling with this printer for some reason, but in my process of learning lpr I ran across something weird - there seems to be an automatically configured printer (though it's not...
I have a special gem of a strategic question for you.
Lately I acquired an OKI C301dn color laser printer capable of duplex printing and USB/LAN connection. The device was dirt-cheap so I did not do much research, but now I know why it was dirt-cheap:
The printing quality is quite...
I'm using the standard lpd to print.
While the print/cups-client combined into print/cups can't use the standard lpd only from commandline.
When I want to print from graphics/okular it prints into stdout (or stderr):
lpr-cups: Bad file descriptor
I think it calls /usr/local/bin/lpr and...
I'm attempting to print to a Konica Minolta bizhub 454e. According to the spec sheet it supports postscript. Our department administrator supplied us with a modified PPD file where we have to enter our login credentials. I believe my login credentials are correct, because I can log in...

After installing FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE on two systems which were previously running 9.1, this time with packages instead of ports, I can no longer print. The printer still works with:
% nc XER 9100 < prtst.txt
so I know it is not a hardware problem. I have followed Warren Block's excellent...
