What do you think about a "SteamBSD" machine ?

The only person who knows about this stuff is shkhln
who wrote the linux-steam-utils

From his previous post about AI projects using his work i think highly unlikely he would want to be involved

I find it hard to believe that the only possible answers are highly technical ones. I think it is possible to discuss complex projects in a more casual way. As someone who isn't a programmer, I wouldn't be able to hold my own in a highly technical discussion—I freely admit I don't know how to program (in classical terms). However, I can engage in discussions involving low to medium technical complexity, and that is the kind of response I expect from you.

Maybe sometimes silence can be more eloquent than words? Besides, no one is forced to be interested in the projects you choose to participate in, even if they find them useful.

Not if I’m portrayed as a chatterbox who produces nothing.

Not if you (plural) urge me to show you something when I’ve already done so, but you (plural) ignore it.

You (plural) talk too much. I've already produced more useful and complex projects than you (plural) in your (plural) whole life.

I have never used Steam

im not a C programmer,
dont know anything about Kernel development or the graphics stack

If people dont know about a subject then they cant have a discussion about it

I can only tell you about the process i go though to create projects,
which involves reading all the documentation,
understand how everything work and then developing the logic to implement the idea.

shkhln is the only person who knows about this and you asked if he wanted to colloborate,
he didnt respond, so he doesnt

It seems you don't have a good imagination. I want stimulate you a little bit.
  1. From the screenshot, which elements indicate that FreeBSD is running as the host system while Debian is running as a guest inside QEMU?
  2. What is the difference between running Debian in QEMU with full CPU emulation and using QEMU with hardware acceleration through a hypervisor such as bhyve/vmm? How could you verify which mode is being used?
  3. Assuming the Debian VM needs to communicate both with the FreeBSD host and with the local network, which virtual networking configurations could be used, and what are the differences between NAT, bridge, and TAP?
  4. How could you determine, from inside the Debian VM, which devices are virtualized by QEMU and which devices, if any, have been assigned directly to the VM through PCI passthrough?
  5. If you wanted to make this VM configuration persistent, which QEMU configuration components would you need to save in addition to the disk image—for example CPU, RAM, PCI devices, networking, and firmware—in order to restart it later with the same virtual hardware setup?

Where did I urge you to show me anything? I'm really not interested in your tinkering with LLMs at all, and that's the whole point. Just stop pretending to be an artist, because this isn't art, and you're not even the one making it.

You (plural) talk too much. I've already produced more useful and complex projects than you (plural) in your (plural) whole life.
Sorry to hear that.

Ignoring the usual reddit mob...some guys there seemed to issue genuine warnings about feasibility of the project, tho
i.e. do you really, really want to spend huge amount of time and tokens on this? It is most likely a cluster F of undocumented HW quirks.

I'm not stupid. I will spend a small quantity of tokens to make some experimentation with a short list of games.

Just stop saying that you're an artist, because this isn't art, and you're not even the one making it.

If you happen to think I consider myself as skilled as someone who spent years studying at university, you're mistaken. Obviously, delegating tasks you can't handle yourself isn't ideal. But don't forget, I'm a hobbyist. I try to complete the projects I want to do using the tools and the competence I have. I don't view myself as a programmer in the same league as those who studied for years at university—though, in a way, I suppose I am a kind of. After all—and perhaps you missed this—I’m not exactly a complete novice; I’ve been working with computers since I was 16 and have picked up some fundamentals along the way. On their own, those basics wouldn't have been enough to build complex projects. But today, we have LLMs, and I use them to fill in the gaps in my knowledge—and I manage to produce good results.

I'm not stupid.
Famous last words :)

Given your background in psychology.
The only usable methodology I came across [researching for .mil PTSD regimen and personal curiosity], is the Internal Family/Parts Therapy/Systems (it has a lot of names).

TLDR: When you experience trauma, your Self splits and creates another persona, often stuck in the setting, including (im)maturity level, when it occurred. To manage them we create other personas etc. This was observed in control group (normal people) under MRI - study on heavy cases of split-personality. Goal of the therapy is to return the parts back in to Self aka regaining self-confidence aka Fear is the mind killer....to quote a classic.

Behavioral psychology I consider to be a mistake, especially given it's prevalence.
If men were the automatons that behaviorists claim they are, the behaviorist psychologists could not have invented the amazing nonsense called 'behaviorist psychology.'

Robert A. Heinlein

Why I talk about it....one guy made the IFS almost (without Ai it is too complex/fuzzy) to an algorithm. He used to be sysadmin, I believe.
https://sfhelp.org/site/intro.htm

LLMs and agents could work with that and guide people through the process.

Might be more suited for your talents than working on distraction machine aka Steam gaming contraption.
But who am I to tell you what your heart desires...

I probably enjoy fixing broken operating systems or adding features to them—much like I would with someone's psyche. After all, there is an analogy between the hard hardware (the brain) and the electrical impulses that program the mind (firmware/software). So, in a sense, I like working on operating systems because I enjoy clinical psychology....when I was a child I have been a good videogames programmer...

Given the seemingly fractal nature of the universe, there is probably not much difference between meatware and siliconware.
Law is also a sort of programming. It has syntax, keywords and conditions etc.
But both of these disciplines - psychology and law - would benefit from a bit of UNIX philosophy. Or at least succumb themselves to scientific method - if the results are failing the hypothesis must be off. We have century of behavioral psychology and law has more pages than ever but we have more neurotic people and more scam (injustice) than in cave days.

In any case, there are already 100 games running on FreeBSD, so the SteamBSD machine is already ready... all that's missing is a machine with standardized hardware...that nobody would buy. So yes, this project could die here and now...

I'm not interested to treat people with mental health issues; I prefer fixing operating systems affected by bugs or misconfigurations :) ; sorry for you if you wanted to push me to stop using AI :P.

I don't view myself as a programmer in the same league as those who studied for years at university—though, in a way, I suppose I am a kind of.
No, of course you are not, even remotely. In fact, as a programmer, you're not in any league, and I'm sure you'd despise anyone who'd make such claims if you'd actually earned the required skills and knowledge yourself.

But today, we have LLMs, and I use them to fill in the gaps in my knowledge—and I manage to produce good results.
I'm afraid you forgot, as always, about those who produced a mere 100% of the code so that later you could appropriate it by calling it "filling in the gaps in my knowledge". Whether it was Corvin Köhne, Abhinav Chavali, shkhln, or other real programmers who did all the legwork, either directly or indirectly by serving as a "training material" for LLMs you're using.

You did some work, too, nobody is taking that away from you. And it's not nothing. You found and gathered various abandoned or unsupported software projects, paid real money to Anthropic for generating some missing parts you needed, and tested many intermediate results to the best of your abilities until they ran. But that's it, and that's not programming.

This is why, to me, it's entirely irrelevant how many projects you've finished, let alone dropped halfway, and how large they are, as long as your role in them remains the same. I strongly believe they're not yours, and that this is why you don't get the credit you're craving. And claiming otherwise only makes it much worse in my opinion.

OTOH, everyone is grateful for every human-made contribution, no matter how small, because FreeBSD, like any other big FOSS project, probably needs contributors who may eventually become maintainers more than anything else. And nobody would say a word to you about its insignificance, simply because there is no such thing. But by looking at

I guess that's just too small for a guy like you even for a start.

a] you can't heal people - they must do it themselves
b] I have no desire to push anyone from using Ai. It is wonderful tool, especially for me, who hates and can't remember syntax for more than few minutes.
Why should I overload my neurons by some arbitrary rules, settings, exemptions, quirks etc., some other monkey came up with? Waste of time and neurons. Concepts, understanding, the whys are the important stuff. Speaking after lifetime of RTFM, google and trying to hack around the errors some developers created.

For the umpteenth time, you have spoken to me disrespectfully, even resorting to somewhat dishonest arguments—perhaps with the aim of hurting me. For this reason, I will no longer read what you write or correspond with you. I know you don't care, I care less than you. Someone who refuses to give others even the slightest credit or acknowledgment does not deserve attention; such a person uses their own anger and dissatisfaction as an excuse to treat others poorly. I believe you struggle to channel the negative emotions you feel into arguments tempered by caution, a sense of humor, and—at the very least—basic decency toward the people you are talking to. And in my view, doing that is far more important than knowing how to program. So, I wish you good luck.

It might seem like getting help from AI means solving every PC problem. But who wants someone else to solve every problem ? Not me. AI doesn't solve everything; I still have to resolve a good amount of issues myself, even with its assistance. Sometimes it even makes mistakes, and I have to figure out why it went wrong and how to fix the error. The problems I need to solve—including with the help of AI—are well-calibrated and appropriately scaled for me. They require effort on my part, yet not so much that it becomes excessive or causes me unbearable emotional stress.

As you all know i am also a top football manager

And have won the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup on multiple occasions

By shouting at the TV "kick the fecking ball, kick it, ffs, just kick it, right now cross it, go on,
go on my son, now score"

I have achieved remarkable success

But some bloke called Pep keeps claiming credit for all my work,
so i never get the acclaim i deserve

But I don't want credit for merits I don't possess. I want recognition for the effort I put in and also, to some extent, for the results I achieve. I don't want it all (oh my god : I want it all [and I want it now] is a song of Freddie Mercury) ; I just want a share of what is due to me. That is why, in my previous post, I spoke of "the slightest credit or acknowledgment". Read carefully what I write. I was precise. Since I am bombarded almost exclusively with criticism—much of it unconstructive—surely I have the right to ask for "the slightest credit or acknowledgment"? After all, I contribute the effort, the attention, the money, and my basic skills, and I see solid projects through to completion. Therefore, I deserve less criticism and more recognition. More recognition—it does not mean the full credit— one would give a programmer who writes everything from scratch. I believe my requests are humble.

Those who criticize with excessive harshness, without ever giving credit where it is due, aren't in the position to tell the person they are fiercely criticizing—and treating like dirt—that *he* is the one acting like an artist. No, it is the person who never offers thanks but treats others poorly who needs to search their own conscience and ask themselves why they fall prey to a cognitive bias that paints others as arrogant, even though they themselves treat those people like doormats.

ZioMario just do your own thing friend. The input of others shouldn't matter. Just do what you find interesting and enjoy doing. There is nothing wrong with that. Others can use your project if you make it available or they can choose to not use it. No worries. Also, people can contribute if you allow it or they can choose to not contribute. It's not even a big deal. You shouldn't worry about what others say or their opinions.

Feynman is famous for explaining very difficult concepts in simple terms. I bet you are misremembering or misunderstanding what he said.

Absolutely not, and you should first check your claims before throwing the ball over the net.

Feynman is famous for communicating science to aspiring scientists. And that's what it is all about. Journalist is not a scientist, he can't understand Feynman's explanation.

If you watched the first video I posted you wouldn't have these questions.
The point was, the journalist asking, hasn't got enough fundament to receive Feynman's explanation. Feynman clearly explains that if he starts answering his questions in simple terms the hole is just going to grow. Example is not being able to move object through object, and slippery ice, which we take for granted, has extremely complex "bottom line" that somebody who doesn't know electromagnetics on college level cannot grasp.

The point is, if a developer attends a lecture where a premier operating system developer will explain operating systems, and you or Zio attend it too, you're not going to learn anything. No matter how successful the teacher is, and how good he is as a communicator.

I don't know if you or anyone else has ever held a lecture or just tutored someone. It begins with assumption that student understands some ground facts. Problem with LLM, it is a dumb machine, it just keeps on going. Real teacher does quickly with those cases. If someone asks me to tutor him how to build a GUI application I expect him to be a programmer. Because it is impossible otherwise.

Also here on forum there was an AI nut that wrote he likes Suno or generative music, it's great and all the same to him. Exactly every musician on the planet today would be glad to break his instrument over the guys head if they could walk away freely...

Has it simply occurred to you that unless you know how to develop you cannot score the outcome of the AI? How can you claim AI can program or build systems or create good graphics (the things you paste on the board are 90% bs slop, waste of energy and bit space, some of the futuristic stuff is good - the ones you invested more time into), or make good songs if you can't do it yourself? And then have audacity to confront people who do?

Btw. the way how Feynman explains why he cannot explain is still top notch science communication.
I wish people would do this today.

Lately Stanford made a paper about different evolutional lineage of two parts of the brain. The "science outlets" started with "your brain was once two organs" articles. This is what happens when you dillute the issue so much that anyone can understand it. It loses any meaning, any precision, any chance to be utilized for a purpose.

On some tech forums like hacker news discussion arose and interestingly enough, it was pretty much voted that "your brain was two organs" is the best ELI5 there is. And completely inaccurate.

This is what happens when you want "regular people" to understand complex topics. Total delusion. "Smart" people still think you can teleport stuff because of entanglement. "Smart" people still think that entanglement can break the information speed barrier. "Smart" people still think nature is dual between waves and particles. Physicist knows the context of these things, what is natural observable, what is a mathematical model.
