The Random Thread

In NYC, it's rough (for NYC, but not for Maine, fernandel and not sure where drhowarddrfine is, but I found with my brand new boots, bought after the last snowstorm--and the place I went to mentioned how their stock was severely depleted from people rushing to buy after the last one) and the temperature's about 17 F, (-8.3 C) but it's really not as bad as it seems it should be. With insulated pants--not super insulated, but moderately, a t shirt, sweatshirt over that and a good winter coat, I was fine. On the other hand, i don't plan on going out again today. But the prediction last night was around 9 inches, and now wunderground.com is saying up to 3 inches (7.62 cm). Tomorrow is calling for light snow. So, I don't think it'll be too bad in Manhattan at least for most people. Of course, there are a lot of disadvantaged in NYC as there are elsewhere, and they won't have it so easy.

It is cold and a lot of snow for winter recreation
Looks like a good time for this

Yep. Even here in the home of Budweiser we have had quite a number of local breweries that make pretty good beers.
In a number of different styles?

One of the things that is odd is how beer styles in Europe are regional. My favorite example is Duesseldorf (dark lager) versus Koeln (Cologne, light beer). The two cities are 30km away from each other, but culturally as different and can beer. And each thinks that the beer from the other one is nothing but water from the river Rhein (Rhine) mixed with piss, while their own beer is god's ambrosia. In reality, both are pretty good.

In general, I prefer local beers, even if they are objectively not terribly good. Makes life more interesting. Old mangling of an advertising slogan from Milwaukee: "If you are out of Schlitz, you are out of town".

As a Belgium i cannot interfere. So I'm Flemish, i drive 50km South there they don't speak Flemish but French. But I taste the local beer. Meaning it's an experience. Another thing is Cheese, and Cheese & Beer go together.

Yes. I'm not really into all that and I'm not really a drinker or into beers that much but I do enjoy all that as a social drinker. I don't know how many local breweries there are and couldn't name them all but they all have a number of different styles. There's a heavy German culture here and that's where some of it comes from. I'm half German myself.

Just a couple of days ago the news reported a couple of the smaller ones were shutting down for reasons I don't recall.

I heard about USB XHCI interrupt moderation (IMOD), and figured out the addresses to disable it! Nothing noticeable at 1000Hz on a mouse, but I'm curious about 8K (above 1K needs the wireless receiver and I gotta re-connect the battery; I was fine with a wire and slightly lighter mouse :p)

It can be scripted easy too!
Code:
"Rw.exe" /Min /NoLogo /Stdout /Command="W32 0xC1222024 0x00000000"

Apparently XHCI controllers have interrupt modulation default-enabled (different OEMs different settings); Windows 7 had a fast setting, and 10+ has a different setting (I guess power efficiency; more info here and here). I don't think I'd really notice anything on my general laptop, but it seems particularly interesting for PCVR stuff!

Can XHCI IMOD be modified on FreeBSD?

So, it looks like the activity in this forum is low. The periods of more than one hour without anybody making a comment or even leaving a like abound. Why? I have no idea. This is a forum about an OS used worldwide by at least hundreds of thousands of people. Maybe the internet forum format is what is going downhill and kids are all using Discord or chatting in Roblox or I don't know.

Additionally, it is quite obvious that people seriously invested in the development of FreeBSD (both the base system and any port) very very very very rarely show up around here. I wonder why. There are exceptions, but they are very few.

A consequence of all of this is that many people who still visit this place use the "Latest activity" page to see if there's anything going on. But there's never much activity, hence if you happen to be a person who likes to write comments or leave likes because you are an MF (mawkish fellow) like that, a spawn of the devil basically, these silent stalkers of the forum see your avatar too often and, if they don't approve your comments, they get more and more upset, until one day they explode and they leave a comment in a random place directed at you and criticizing you very harshly.

This results in the verbose person getting very scared, because MF (mawkish fellows) like myself are sensitive people, and decide to leave the forum completely or drastically reduce their contribution.

So yes, people are the worst. Florp people.

I searched the meaning of florping. Quite sure Urban dictiionary is wrong. What?

Most of us are more serious and come here for technical discussion. Silliness or fluff can often get ignored. I've been here more often lately due to the weather. I also come here when on a break between serious activities but don't often post.

High qualitiy shitposting is the best contribution to a forum.
For those who cannot do better it is the maximum performance they can provide.
This draws attention but deteriorates the purpose of any forum.
I like to encourage all those in need for such to create their super shitposting forums elsewhere.

And for the super sensitive here: If you cannot stand the heat of the shit you have created, just stay out of the kitchen.
It it a relief for any community if troublemakers leave voluntarily.

eternal_noob you did make me laugh, though I'm not sure I agree with you. Or, at least I'd say, depends upon the forum. I think these forums are pretty good at sticking to tech stuff, and everyone active here knows not to go too far off the rails.
