The Random Thread

This thread is intended for posting random musings and random sh*t in general (within the limits allowed by the rules of the forum and of the off-topic section, I guess).

That is, if you feel the need to post something (it happens) but you don't want to open a thread, you can post it here.

If it catches on, good; if it doesn't, I'll let it die peacefully.

For starters, I'm quite certain that I've become addicted to coffee. It hadn't happened to me before. I had never craved a coffee before, but today I did. Today I needed an effing coffee. It was to be expected because I'm drinking a lot of coffee lately. Am I becoming Too Much Coffee Man?

Edit Jan-24, 2026:
  • Get a random number or a lot of them:
  • Get Maturin's short story about coffee in PDF format (attached).

American coffee and european coffee are two different things: are you talking about european black tar coffee, or americanized steeped robusto bean swill. I've acquired a taste for the darker french roast (fresh ground of course). It goes well with my other pick-me-ups (la-flor-dominicano maduro cigar and 1792 small batch bourbon served neat) ;)

it was the opposite for me, i used to somewhat like coffee back when i was a kid (like 8 or 9 years old) but then i simply grew out of it and now hate it
the only exception is if it's mixed with something like chocolate or if it's really well-made, but generally yeah i give it a pass

Espresso all the way, I drink. I don't know enough about coffee as to answer kent_dorfman766 . It's a espresso capsule machine. Here in Spain are cheap and popular. The capsules are cheap too.

ruby R53 , oh my, how come you could drink coffee when you were are kid? Is that usual in your part of the world?

BTW, I was coming here to say that it makes no sense that the section "latest posts" in the home page shows more than 1 post per user. So I've said it now.

Anybody else in the US finally putting on their winter tires today?
I don't even know whether "winter tires" means literally switching your car tires or putting that metal things on. In Barcelona it snows once every 4 or 5 years. When it does, it snows very lightly and only for a few hours, but the city stops to a halt because we aren't prepared..

Car tires. Or in my case whole wheels that I put on. The other gizmo is called snow chains. There are also tires with spikes, but they are usually not acceptable on public roads.

The specific problems I am facing are 1) need to find the tools and 2) last time the wheels were put on by a dealer who always greatly exceed the allowed torque on the bolts.

I feel so lucky I live in Barcelona. What you have to do seems too much manual work for my taste.

awd and awk sound like pain groans.

The problem with openning a thread in the "serious" parts of the forum is that it's taken too seriously. For instance, I just noticed that if I press Alf+F4, my Plasma DE freezes. I have Alt+F4 disabled in it's "default" action of closing the current window. I don't have Alt+F4 assigned to anything. But also I don't want to investigate further because it's not a problem to me. I won't press it. Period. I did press it because I wanted to see if it worked inside a Windows VM, but I tend to use the mouse inside Windows VMs because the keyboard controls the FreeBSD host. So it's no problem. If I open a thread, people will ask for configurations and stuff and whether I have done any research. But I don't want to invest any effort in this matter, so it's better that I don't open a thread. There's no protocol for this case (casually inform about something), so better not to do anything.

Caffeine does bad things to you if you are a chronic user. Once metabolic adjustments occurs several weeks of administering caffeine, it'll "zombify" you. What it does it changes your active attention threshold. Meaning you will have a higher mental focus/attention barrier to do things that you even enjoy doing when not on caffeine and to do things that take more focus and attention than average. It's the craziest stuff. It takes several weeks to revert back to normal after you quit caffeine, if you decide you want your life back.

There are other bad things caffeine does that are pretty scary too. Synapse pruning that happens during normal sleep is disrupted. Just crazy things that I don't even know how to talk about because....well, you probably imagine reasoning with addicts is very difficult. ☕⛔🚫

I'll use that in the future when someone doesn't agree with me: "reasoning with addicts is very difficult." Then, I'll argue that they are addicted to whatever thing (misinformation, for instance, that is a good complement). "You are addicted to misinformation and reasoning with addicts is very difficult, so you will understand that I don't elaborate further."

I don't care much about coffee. Some epochs I drink; some epochs I don't. I've heard good things from experts about coffee and bad things from experts about coffee. The truth is I don't care. My mind works quite badly on it's own, so a little more wrongness doesn't make a difference.

I don't know about other areas but, here in St Louis, one must run to the grocery store and load up on eggs, milk and bread if there's snow or ice forecast. I was so embarrassed this morning cause I truly was out of milk and bread and had to get some. One of the popular grocery stores was out of milk. It's ridiculous.

I usually have supplies at hand, but had to go to the supermarket for other reasons yesterday. Pure madness. Loaded up on Sushi :)

I've just remembered the first time in my life that I heard about FreeBSD. It was maybe 3 years ago in a YouTube video by a guy who had been using it as a daily driver for some time and explained that he was very satisfied.

Now I wonder how many other people in Barcelona use it as their daily OS as I do.
