Open Internet in decline according to Google court filing

At the turn of the century, radio stations would pop up all over the place by anyone who knew how to throw up an antenna. This caused problems with interference and every crazy around. I am of the strong opinion that eventually the web will licensed and regulated--and it should be.

By which entity?
In the same manner that all worldwide radio and television frequencies are regulated now. In the USA that might be under the FCC. I forgot which organization manages international frequencies.

EDIT: Oh. Of course. It's the ITU but I'm not sure that would be appropriate. It might need to be an entirely different and new organization. Same with the FCC.

This is the government supplied application that runs on your client. Be it phone, pc, tablet... whatever. And having this installed is going to be mandatory if you want to use internet, banking, gaming...whatever. It is going to be tied to your personal id. This is literally like having someone behind your back that stares at your screen constantly and recording everything you do. This system renders any type of encryption completely useless. No vpn, tor, drive encryption, or any other privacy tool can save you from this because, as the name implies, its client side scanning. And you cant get around because its mandatory. You dont want to use it is same like sayin im not getting my personal id card or passport. You go to jail. Its simple as that.

Ok. I mean it's not ok, but it is circumventable. Because you can use this device when you need it, to perform a banking operation or access e-government and then shut it down.

As far as I know EU is not doing anything about FOSS and we can still normally run our computers.

I hate cellphones anyway. If this makes people shut them down and leave them in a metal box at home, so be it.

Right now you cannot even use FOSS on a cellphone, not even aftermarket roms, for such purposes as e-banking.

Guys. You have to understand that future technologies are working against you, not for you. Once this law gets implemented, there is nothing stopping internet companies and network equipment manufacturers to develop routers and modems so that they accept incoming connections from only "government verified" devices that have your digital id. There is no escaping this reality, and we are to blame, because we let all this happen gradually and we did nothing. Also, dont comfort yourselves thinking that this is the EU problem. Its going to get implemented globally. The only thing that can stop this, i world war.

can't wait for the bootleg internet to be a thing and the age of hacked firmwares. getting ready to design the digital age cheesebox

Nah. I think he is missing the context, let's hope he never will connect with that first hand (but my hopes are slim for that. The avalance has started, it is too late for the pebbles to vote).

Please let's stick to the current reality.
I am working inside one of many EIDAS effort groups for one of the EU national governments.

There are still ton of issues and still a ton of opinions how future should proceed. The biggest problem is that EU does not have a vendor producing cellphones and so called secure elements e.g. a proprietary DRM chip.

Which creates a problem for the application. EIDAS system is OpenID and everything is open source. The system will be established under a trust anchor of allowed DNS URLs. E.g. a wallet application from play store should retrieve and live by the list of trusted peers (issuers and verifiers).

This is completely FOSS and completely open which makes it susceptible to local exploits.

The reality of situation is that people are not going to use one wallet app for money, other for e-government, the third for school etc. It is natural that everything can be accessed by everyone and then the application usage will segment itself properly over the entire market. Meaning - most Croatians use e-banking app from a private bank to access public e-goverment portal, because their primary reason to use digital trust is banking.

So if those applications "want" to run under trusted environment I'm afraid we have no choice.

Like I said best way to do this is to get a leased device from some authority.

If you have a debit/credit card - you already have that kind of a device. It is not yours, it is leased and you have responsibilities. The bank reserves the right to withold your card under their discretion. Give it to a clerk, she sees some problem, you might not get it back. Put it in ATM, ATM sees some problem, swallows it and tells you go to bank and talk to people.

The biggest problem here, the elephant in the room about EIDAS and Chat Control laws is that American corporations have access to all of this data which per GDPR is European only. Whatsapp et al. are not truly E2E because you don't control the keys. What these corporations did is ensure local authorities, ISPs, lawful interception agencies, have absolutely shit hard time accessing anything bar metadata traveling thru their network, while corporations have access to everything.

These corporations are less to be trusted than European goverments. They sell data to represive non-democratic gov'ts around the world. How do you think Whatsapp, Facebook, et. al are able to operate in strict regimes where all opposition is shunned?

Problem is not Europe and the goverments, problem are the people that introduce things to their life they absolutely have no clue about. "I have nothing to hide", "I don't care if Facebook/Google knows everything about me".

This would've never happened if the "Internet user" mindset was what it was in the 00s. Everything would be scrutinized. Nobody would be willing to yield important personal data just to share cat pictures with family.

But here we are.

He who has nothing to hide has a very sad life. And why is he still wearing pants?

Good to know you are doing this work, and I can only concur - the biggest problem is people not knowing anything about what they do or what the device in their hand does. And that includes politicans, oh yes. I can recommend the memorires of one ex-meta C-level woman, she writes about how much of this works. It's rather depressing and sickening.

I found it rather depressing listening to Zuckerberg answer to some committee in America. These people were voted in, and they rule over the most developed technology exporting nation ever, yet they simply knew zero about the topic, not even did a basic due diligence.

Imagine Bell selling telephone systems to countries, a system where local switch panel operator cannot tap into the line, but Bell from USA can.

What happened in last ~ 15 years is this. And now we have to swim in it somehow.

I have no clue where you got that from! Maybe I should be questioning who is drunk.

EDIT: Oh! Now that I've sat a while, I see what you're trying to say. Yes! Reddit is a "receiving device" and a mouthpiece for political agitation and violence unheard of in any part of human history and needs to be shut down or at least heavily restricted/moderated from what it is now. It is a known danger to society.
