Dead Internet is this still a theory or its reality ? Or maybe - World ?

At my workplace we recently took on two new people and I'm training them up. The younger of the two often defaults to playing with his phone once some task is finished.
I thought that was a feature of the young and up-to-date workforce.

I was basically fired in favor of these, because I did not do what was expected: constantly check social media and applaud to all the pronouncements of the corporate leadership.

Dunno, what else is there to do, really? Usually trainees don't have much authority to just 'do whatever, as long as it's in line with goals of the workplace'. When I was a trainee, my strategy was to pile on tasks, prioritize them, and just keep working until I'm done. Kind of know the schedule ahead for at least several days. I ended up being just friggin' efficient. Sometimes it's really on the trainer to organize/explain the expectations, training and schedule properly. If you know what's coming, and when, boring stuff is easier to take.

I never checked social media or 'applaud pronouncements of corporate leadership', but it's still a good idea to stay informed of what the top brass is doing - and to use it to your advantage. 😈 Oh, and what about being constantly 'At the ready' ?

You still raise an eyebrow.

Police confirmed that a teacher in Rivne grabbed a 13-year-old high school student because she hit him in the shoulder with a dividers.
This was her response to a remark to put her phone down.
Neither the teacher nor the girl's parents have any complaints.
What happened to announcing policy before the school term starts, and outline the procedures of discipline enforcement in the student handbook? And maybe explain that 'None of that will come up if students actually pay attention in class' ?

I guess security cams in the classrooms are gonna be needed. 😒

This is when I like to tell a story of when I did manage to talk a bit of sense into someone:
Wild but true story: I was on Discord while drunk on New Year's Eve. Talked to a kid who got a bad grade in a class, and wanted to file a complaint against the instructor. I tried to make sense, thinking that maybe the complaint is legit. Kid gave me some details and his reasoning. In the process, it hit him that it's his own lack of effort, and the grade he got was fair. I was actually thanked in the end! 😲

One thing I do not understand at all is that I recently found out Warner Losh, Colin Perceval, and others hang out on reddit. They have accounts here but rarely visit here. This makes no sense to me at all except, perhaps, that the general public is on reddit so it's a chance to interact with them there. But then they aren't helping out their most loyal users.
Yea, it's hard to keep up on all the places that I have to 'go out and visit'. I'm on Reddit because I'm learning Norwegian and there's a few r/norway and similar groups that support me in that. I happen to also notice FreeBSD things there, and post, but don't seek them out. forums are just a different enough interaction model from Discord, IRC, and Matrix that it's hard to keep track of or come to. So I neglect the forums because it's a poor fit with how I do other things... I'd love to hear ideas to make it easier for me, but everything I've tried to do to increase my engagement hasn't worked because my attention is so fragmented...

They don't always use their real names here. Warner is bsdimp I forgot Percival's and the others.
I'm bsdimp everywhere online. And my real name is associated with every single one of those accounts. Different social media companies display it more or less prominently... And often times, at least for people with common names, the obvious handle like MarkJohnson is already taken...

That's exactly the habit I try to avoid. I'd rather put in the effort to maintain many different passwords than to give up my privacy like that. My password maintenance app is ever-growing, and no, it's not on a cloud service. If I can make life difficult for the advertisers, I will happily do that. 😈

bsdimp Your name is associated with your account but your handle is not your real name. That's what I meant cause someone once told me they thought you, or someone else, didn't visit here cause your name wasn't listed as a user.

Well, it sounds like it's fragmented for the reasons you mention. Too many different places to visit. If all the FreeBSD devs came here, then no one would go anywhere else.

That said, I understand that a lot of your focus will be on other devs and technical people a lot more than everyday users who tend to come here. But it would be a show of support to see your handle occasionally and a bonus is you might find something you hadn't thought of from the "normals". :)

I feel anonymity causes different behaviors. There's things I wouldn't say to someone in-person, and with some link to myself online, there's some things I also wouldn't say online :p

Like Reddit. There'd be a whole different site-wide vibe if real identities were attached, to real people. But anonymity lets people say anything they want without potential repercussions :p I see a different vibe on FB because of real names.

Reddit lets you log in with your gmail, Apple ID, and Facebook, BTW. I have to be vigilant just to avoid falling into that trap. Most Reddit comments are visible just fine without an account. Oh, and lots of quite questionable sites slurp up Reddit posts.

Loss of privacy is what you get when you fall for the trap of sexy convenience. 😑

I think people might take the anonymity to the public posts, vs the platform.

Someone likely isn't getting a lawyer and going through the process to subpoena Reddit to get a poster's account details to then track them down for a comment, but they might check a phone book real quick if their real name is right there :p

I would not put it past Uncle Sam to actually do that kind of checking, especially if armed with a warrant from law enforcement. eff.org is full of stories like that.

As for phone books: did you know that Google does NOT allow searching by phone number? Even if you try to verify that the phone number belongs to your local grocery store, that won't be really possible. If you ask Google "What is the phone number for my local grocery store", that is possible to answer, though. But Google won't spit out a result that contains the phone number you're trying to verify, even if that number actually belongs to your local grocery store. See this wikipedia link for a good expanation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_telephone_directory .

Dropping a fake phone number before running away is a viable tactic in the fight for safety and privacy.

Pftt. Uncle Sam don't need no stinkin' warrants. Haven't you seen Dear Leader saying he doesn't feel he has to uphold the constitution?
Or are you one of those woke libs who believe that those who are aren't white hetero males should have rights. You probably think there's a problem with dear leader threatening to censor any press that doesn't print stories about how well he's doing.

And if anyone reads this and thinks I'm being serious, well, I bet I know who you voted for.

Great--so, no one will be sent away to a foreign prison without a warrant or due process? That's wonderful news. And, with no disrespect, I'm going to drop out of this conversation now, as I think we try to avoid politics here--I mean, we get them with every news site, even sports sites, and I'm sure no one here comes to read my political views. My sincere apologies for sidetracking the thread, sometimes I see things and with the emotional maturity of a 3 year old, I react.

Guys? We know of the clown car currently leading your parade of kleptocrats. But this is not the place. We can PM about this, but I don't want to take the hammer to the threads here, OK?

I belong to a forum where real names are required and verified. It's the friendliest, most helpful place I've ever been. (It's technical but unrelated to computers.)
It proves personality and is a sign of real character if one stays kind, patient, understanding and respecting even in anonymity.
People acting as morons in anonymity will reveal themselves so sooner or later in real life, too.
