does the user with uid 1001 is named steam ? If not, you need to give the steam user access to your xorg session which is done with xhost +localuser:si:steam

This isn't steam issue, you need to have either a X11 server running (or Wayland with xwayland support), your user need to be running it, and of course you need to have xdg setup correctly which should already be the case with the pam_xdg module
