I am curious what this CUDA test program outputs in podman. Attached as source and compiled with Rocky.

What's the misconception? Gravity and the orbital plane? You sound boarded up like plasma physics.

Neither do we. Even with that small amount of mass the Earth still exerts a gravitational pull on the sun (gravity works both ways). It's a tiny bit but it still makes the sun wobble.

Even more fun fact, the COG for the sun-jupiter combo is outside the sun. So the Jupiter does not orbit the sun technically. </nitpick>

Why switch anything? I can start X.org, break it and start something else. Wayland trying to be the only presence is a red flag. It can be an independent program, like an X-server. No need for separation. X.org, Wayland or any other graphical...

Fun fact, most of the remaining mass is Jupiter. We're literally less than a speck in comparison.

Milky Way stars are not orbiting the black hole Sagittarius A* in the center of the Milky Way galaxy. Betcha you didn't know this. This is the biggest misconception in astronomy. What's going on then? Why are the stars moving in circles around...

covacat When I look at Differences between managed servers and bare metal servers I see full KVM/IPMI is provided. KVM being keyboard/video/mouse in this context.

A Linux ZFS kernel cannot necessarily access a FreeBSD-created poll, though. If FreeBSD activated a single feature in the pool that Linux doesn't have it won't import.

Linkie no workie.

What exactly do you mean by "they don't support FreeBSD"? With dedicated HW it's up to you what you install there. You have an option to upload your custom ISO there too (you can run your own OS too). VMs are, as far as I know, qemu+kvm so it's...

Thanks for clarifying: that is the level of hassle I am keen to avoid. Engineer time (including mine) costs a lot more than the saving from cheaper but inconvenient hosting. For personal stuff, the challenge of unsupported tech is a welcome one...

That's very useful to know. So let's say I'm an idiot and manage to mess up the network configuration, it's possible to log in at the console without needing specialist client software (the thread I linked was talking about needing a Java...

Hetzner is great. In case of problems just write an email and usually within an hour you get access console access via a web-kvm. Alternative: netcup Currently I am moving quite some big projects over from US based clouds.

netcup vps amd64, 6 cpus, 8Gb memory, 160 GB disk. 12 Euro/mo. Additional 600 GB storage + 8 Euro/mo. no complains (they hiked the price somewhat because ram/storage/energy but they all did that). Prices above are current. I also had digital...

I'd rather be a FreeBSD coyote, expert plum cake, and master.

Thanks vmb and gergeskirolos59 for your replies. I've been pointed towards a relevant recent blog post, looking at low-cost European VPS options: The state of European cloud providers in 2026 (via lobste.rs) as well as a suggestion of French...

If you can download a video with yt-dlp (which, for the moment, needs to be run as yt-dlp <url> --extractor-args "youtube:player-client=web_embedded,web,tv" you can then run, on the downloaded video ffmprobe -hide_banner <videoname> Assuming...

I am using https://www.quickhost.uk/cloud-workspace/

they are not stable but support booting your server from any .iso you will provide zap-hosting

How? It doesn't tell what it's missing. Some Youtube videos don't work without further information. How do I find out the format of a video? That would be useful too.

Even cancer is better.

Never had anything with Oracle (not counting tech they acquired from Sun), but my good friend Dave (unfortunately, he passed young) worked in their Johannesburg branch and he hated working there, despite his uncle who got him this job was in...

What's the purpose of AI agents? I think it's a buzzword and the only goal is to not show any of the reasoning and decision-making to the public. Other advantage is that it can own someone else's computer for it and leave no trace, like a botnet...

Oracle always had competition, unless you define their market in a myopic way. They shipped what is probably the first relational database available to commercial customers in 1979. It was a small upstart, competing with hierarchical and network...

At least illumos is considered a response to him closing off Solaris, and is not under his control. Larry Ellison is who bought CBS and a large share of Tik Tok in the US, so he can promote his warped geo-political agenda. We can support illumos...

I'm lucky enough to never had dealt with One Rich Asshole Called Larry Ellison, but has anyone on these forums ever had to deal with Oracle? What is your opinion of them and are they really that bad?

TUI > GUI TUI - no need to worry about graphic drivers or RAM size GUI - only suitable for LiveCD/USB full desktop experience methods - you try/test it first in full GUI and then install from there. If you want ease of use out of the box OSS...

FreeBSD is free software and no one owes you anything. You can either help out if you wish to see improvements or move on to other projects. You can help out by filing problem reports with *specific* details on things you want to see improved, or...

I've not used Ventoy so all this is speculation. if you do the file command on the memstick .img it looks like it has 2 partitions a DOS/MBR boot partition and a "data section". same file command on an ISO tells you it 9660 CD-ROM filesystem...

Excellent work.

AI processes living on your hardware is useful? I think the primary goal is to not have to explain what we're doing.

you can tell because the cake is baked

you can look at dmesg to determine if your mic is picking up on your device. Another step is to run cat /dev/sndstat to confirm what audio devices you have avialable.

did you check under whether the extensions for the video format is installed?

Well, I've been running apache since its beginning. But to the best of my memory I didn't have to do any wizardry to plug in letsencrypt for TLS and then configure the reverse proxy, with password on apache level, to access the internal non-tls...

I'm not up enough on the changes that happened since 15.0 to know, but I'm fairly certain that it's how I installed FreeBSD 15.0 when I came back and it is listed as being tested. I'd wager that if this issue in this topic is caused by ventoy's...

Oh, yes. But the nice thing about fzf is, it gives you that list to pick from while you are typing the thing you are looking for. As you type that list gets shorter and shorter until you spot the thing you are looking for and can select it from...

It's a tool that works in a fairly specific situation, but when it works, it's rather useful. I wouldn't suggest using it all the time and in truth, I only use it from time to time. Most of the time, I prefer to just have more sensible names on...

Exactly, img file is a data dump of a block device which for PC is per MBR format - the boot record. CD's (9660) don't have a boot record, they use El Torito extensions, the boot image is located through the catalog entry, hence why PC BIOS...

a memstick image is not a dvd

Yes, and a totally redundant question if I may say. I skimmed through the awful AI generated video. It's a normal 2D monitor. We've been using 2D monitors on computers since 50 years ago. It is the job of graphics card to run it, not the OS. Over...

Filename completion is a feature of the shell, not the filesystem. If the shell supports it, it won't matter what filesystem, UFS. ZFS, ext2/3/4, FAT, etc. That said, tcsh comes with a bunch of example custom completions, including ZFS specific...

In /etc/sysctl.conf if you add kern.msgbuf_show_timestamp=1 It will display a "sort of" timestamp. This is how it looks: ... [6] igb0: link state changed to UP [6] lo0: link state changed to UP [6] igb0: link state changed to DOWN [10] igb0...
