I don't see how different custom NFSROOTDIR rc.conf of the same PXE root file system can be used by different clients. The documentation of diskless and /etc/rc.initdiskless doesn't mention such an option.
You can find that script here. The...
I see. That explains it. I was over confident because I had done a 14.3 to 15.0 upgrade a little over a week ago. So it seems that bug fix never got ported back to older versions (which makes sense since they are un-maintiainted).
This was a...
That's a bug in freebsd-update that should've been fixed a while back. Try the workarounds here:
https://euroquis.nl/freebsd/2025/12/09/freebsd-upgrade.html
I attempted an upgrade from 14.1 to 15.0 on a freshly installed system (yes it's a cloud image that had 14.1). The upgrade exploded unexpectedly and the system is, well, trashed.
I followed the same steps I did hundreds of times for years...
Hi all, I'm Mick from Australia.
Dabbled in FreeBSD in 2005, but got sucked back into the Linux world. Just a desktop user really, setup the occasional home server etc - not involved in any development.
Have become disillusioned with Linux...
Hi all. Old time linux user here. Working as Jira Admin / DevSecOps (gitlab/gke). For the first time with Freebsd 15 i was able to install it without problems on some spare laptops around home.
Very very nice performance. I will be using FreeBSD...
Just #pkg install xlibre (it will deinstall xorg parts for you) and then reinstall nvidia-driver-devel with xlibre flavor :) This is the only part that seems to change:
xlibre-0.1
xlibre-drivers-1.0
xlibre-nvidia-driver-devel-590.48.01...
Never did get it to work with pf, but did with ipfw
Used this rule set
ipfw="/sbin/ipfw -q"
wan="tun0"
lan="re0"
${ipfw} set disable 1
${ipfw} nat 1 config log if ${wan} deny_in same_ports unreg_only reset
${ipfw} add 0010 set 1 nat 1 ip from...
Hello world :-) Just switched to XLibre on FreeBSD :-) All works fine, maybe more responsive, big thank you for the port! :-)
I tested some games and they fail to start as opposed to xorg, I have reported it to theupstream...
This was a topic that I felt needed it's own thread.
You've probably heard of X11Libre, and its backstory till now.
My position on the topic is that we need a well maintained X11 server with good security features, And That's X11Libre.
I want...
First of all, remove the / entry from /etc/exports. Exporting root is not a smart or productive thing to do. You will get (you are) nowhere.
Then
fetch https://download.freebsd.org/ftp/releases/amd64/amd64/15.0-RELEASE/base.txz -o base.txz...
Yes, I have seen that it's been frozen. I'm surprised that there seem to be few replacements. (I haven't found one that worked well for me). Of course, there is fluxbox with its built-in bar, but I've preferred openbox for years. If I do come...
The kernel gets a parameter specifying the root filesystem from the DHCP server. If it has a ":" in it it is root on NFS.
Note that this doesn't entirely mean it is a diskless install. You can have root on NFS and local other filesystems.
I doubt whether it will effect me but it may give some of you something to think about.

Is the FreeBSD community thinking about this topic?
I don't think there a ton of users of ZFS encryption. It is a rather new feature and most install scripts (both FreeBSD and Linux) use an encrypted block layer under ZFS when asked to encrypt. ZFS native encryption has to my knowledge not...

Unfortunately tint2 has been unmaintained for some time now:
https://gitlab.com/o9000/tint2/-/commit/f3aa2ef0c61838ce16a88733e4d31990c5b5cdf2
There were some forks when I last looked a couple of years ago. They seemed of questionable quality. Do...

Development on Hytale is moving fast. This is an in-progress how-to current as of version 2026.01.28-87d03be09.
If you've tried running a dedicated Hytale server, you've encountered an error about a missing library, and the server failed to...

I recently installed a VM of FreeBSD-16-CURRENT, and found there was no tint2. Due to other issues, I've not been able to update ports in CURRENT, so, as the concept works in Fedora Linux, where I've been using tint2 from F39 in later versions...
I have both log-queries and log-dhcp in my conf file but don't see any ouput.
I do see entries in daemon relating to dnsmasq but I got them without the log entries in dnsmasq.conf
I asked grok to give me a http server in tcl hat takes the request and shows it in stdout. This was the answer that immediately came. it works:
Did it really create it, or took it from somewhere?
I am seeing results, speaking with KI, and still...
Twisting em together and covering it with electrical tape :p
I chopped the Gameport end off a Sidewinder joystick and wired a random USB end to it, and it worked nice for FlightGear!
Before I had female breadboard wires in the Gameport end...
I'm always amazed at the beautiful work a good pcb solder tech can do. Back in my computer hardware design days, I had a layout guy design my circuit board. It was beautiful. Had my technician solder all the parts on but it didn't work. Not that...
I ran into something similar at one point. CPU, things were routed wrong (address lines), good tech lifted and created a swizzle board that flipped things.
If I ran a company again, I'd let them but the motto would be "Don't trust. Do verify." These AI tools are similar to search engines only. Their results may be inaccurate if they work at all.
A bit overkill, but this works as a sudo-ish replacement.
Assuming (as root):
root@host: $ id
uid=0(root) gid=0(wheel) groups=0(wheel),5(operator)
... then set this rule where xxxx is your ordinary user's ID.
root@host: $ sysctl...
