Although this is 5-ish years 'old', it's still relevant. This worked a treat on my HP ProBook 440 G7 with an Intel GPU and FreeBSD 15.0 today. Thank you!

ok, it has the latest version of the firmware - good.

I think other threads have pointed out the problem is having a FreeBsd-kmods and FreeBsd-ports repo; the -kmods is older and if you are on 15.0 not needed. Solution was to edit the pkg conf to say that -kmods was "not enabled".

I tested MATE with XLibre + seatd and it works!

I found out why this happens... When dtlogin starts the X server, it starts it in a clear environment, and so the HOME variable is not set. The X server fails to find ~/ and resorts to /var/log which fails again due to insufficient privileges...
