Your AI Configured Your ZFS. Are You Sure That’s Right?

SO... I'm a 'Microsoftie' when it comes to clients / client-usage. Servers.. FreeBSD, but for clients I prefer Windows. I also have an Office (now 'Microsoft') -365 subscription for well over a decade now. Fun fact? => I'm one of the original 'quoted' complainers who advocated against the poor launch: being able to disable Copilot in Word, but not in Excel nor PowerPoint?

I'm also one of those nerds who has parts of his Unix backup stored on OneDrive because "it works" and "I had excess space".

Here's the thing: I've been diving into Copilot a lot during the past months as part of my AI self-study.

And I just want to say 2 things: you're an idiot if you believe AI on their blue eyes. Yesterday Copilot mentioned "blacklistd" to me, despite its rename to "blocklistd" for a while now.

But you're also missing out if you don't give this new search engine approach a fair try either. Last month I ran into a TMux issue: Midnight Commander suddenly looked distorted after I used a sub-shell: all lines turned into Q's and X's. Trust me: I searched hard. But all Google/Bing even Duck results pointed to the same articles. Including those darn commericialized crap targets.

.... then I asked Copilot.

  • Uitgesloten:
    • Windows Terminal
    • PuTTY
    • .tmux.conf
    • locale / UTF-8 configuratie
    • Midnight Commander configuratie
  • Belangrijke bevinding:
    • ACS-test met \016 en \017 faalde.
    • VT100 graphics test met \033(0 en \033(B werkte.
  • Definitieve workaround/oplossing:
Shell

export NCURSES_NO_UTF8_ACS=1
  • Resultaat:
    • Midnight Commander blijft correct tekenen.

Guess what? NCURSES_NO_UTF8_ACS solved all my issues. Try it: a 'reverse' lookup and see how hard it becomes to get to this result. Then again... the Hong Kong ("Chinese") univisity mentions it.

But I just got the solution without all the overhead. Oh, right: Copilot can also help you build Joomla themes.

See, here's my issue: just because most people (?) use AI to be lazy doesn't imply that this is the only thing you can do with it.

I set up (free) SSL last week. Certbot / "Let's encrypt". I followed all the rules... it no workie?! I knew it had to be something stupid, but do it: "apache ssl connection refused". The first result was obvious enough, too obvious ... to overlook. In which cases it'll be quicker to stop using commercially sponsored search engines and instead..., well... =>

Want:

Plain Text

ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED
geen entries in de access log+geen entries in de error log
betekent vrijwel altijd:
Er luistert niets op die poort.
Translation: "Nothing is listening on that port".

Ergo: "OMG, I changed my vhost, but forgot all about the Listen in my httpd.conf!".

Yes, this was stupid (then again, I didn't forget to open the firewall ;)). but this simple query saved me so much time.....

That might be false advertising.

I get a 403 (Forbidden) when trying to access anything on klarasystems.com... And I suspect this might be due to the DNS mess stateside: Comcast's DNS servers at 75.75.75.75 and at 75.76.75.76 (not completely sure of the second one) seem to have a damaged infrastructure, so I have to turn to other public DNS services (Google, at 8.8.8.8 and Cloudflare at 1.1.1.1). But because Comcast's DNS service is messed up, it's probably not out of question that there was accidental automatic blacklisting of Comcast-controlled IPv4 addresses...

What I write is pure speculation, I might be completely off-base and uninformed, but still, it's hard to imagine why I'd be getting a 403 error... I don't think I've done/posted anything to lead to that error...

😩

ShelLuser : Steve Ballmer would be pretty pissed if he knew that Copilot is aiding and abetting the non-Windows miscreants instead of spending the computing power to help Windows be a higher quality OS... ;) :P

As for replying to this thread: I probably would not want to use Copilot to configure ZFS. I would probably work with Google's AI on that, because the latter actually points me to the information that was used to create the suggestions for me. Having suggestions that I can play with and verify - that is actually helpful. If I knew I can ask Copilot for ideas (but also to not mess with my settings without my OK), then I'd give Copilot a shot at some point.
