Xfce XFCE compositing enabled but not working after upgrade to FreeBSD 14

I had FreeBSD 13-stable working fine, using XFCE with compositing. The system is an i7-4790K and the video card is an older Radeon RX 570 that has previously worked great:

Upgraded to 14-stable, currently 14.1-stable. Reinstalled all ports, and XFCE works, but compositing does not work. It is enabled in the XFCE Window Manager Tweaks settings, but window transparency when dragging doesn't work, and there are some noticeable lags in the UI. Disabling and enabling the Enable Display Compositing changes the checkmark but doesn't have any other obvious effect.

It's possible something internal in xwfm4 settings are messed up, but other than compositing, it seems to work fine. If there are errors, they are shown somewhere I'm not looking. Adding an Extensions file to xorg.conf.d to explicitly enable composite didn't make any difference. And it shouldn't have, since that was not needed in 13.

Xorg log and entire X configuration (just the bare-bones video card file) attached. Any suggestions on how to get compositing working again welcome. Thanks!

xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/vblank_mode showed auto. Both off and auto showed the same behavior, working but without compositing.
 
I've spent too much time trying to make xfce work for me, after upgrading to 13.3 and now to 14.1. None of the hints, suggestions and howto threads solved my issues with xfce :-( gnome-lite runs with no issues. So, I think that xfce window manager is borked.
