Why FreeBSD, if I may..

A year ago I was only familiar with Ubuntu, and maybe it was my fault for being too lazy to learn anything else. However, about a year ago I noticed that I started having problems after upgrading my system, so I decided to give it the heave ho. At that time I just wanted a reliable operating system that wouldn't break every other day, so I decided to give FreeBSD a try. I admit, I kinda jumped int the deep end of the swimming pool without knowing how to swim very well, but eventually I made it through my cry-baby phase, and now I'm able to use FreeBSD relatively well on my own. Incidentally, I have two older HP laptops which I know have Devuan Linux running on, and this works out well because Devuan with Xfce is so friendly that almost anyone can use it.

Whenever you have to figure it out, it's for the better..
 
Server:
  • UNIX compliance - minimalism -> a little bit more secure, more stable and transparent.

  • zfs
  • jails
  • License
  • Support - SUSE, CentOS crapped out on me. And Ubuntu is gonna.

Desktop:
I am getting there. So far I always encountered some HW specific problem (usb passthrough, CUDA, VR).
But I would switch for reasons above plus:
  • zfs - Home directory encryption - it is getting there (I made How to, here). eCryptfs (used only by Linux Mint) is legacy/unsupported and probably unsafe.
  • jails - this would be great for sandboxing apps.
